Fully Funded BBSRC CASE PhD Studentship:<http://www.findaphd.com/search/ProjectDetails.aspx?PJID=56939> High Resolution (UAV) Remote Sensing for Improved Crop Field Trials (?Field Phenotyping?)<http://www.findaphd.com/search/ProjectDetails.aspx?PJID=56939>
A four year, fully funded BBSRC CASE Phd Studentship is available in the area of remote sensing for improved phenotyping of wheat (i.e. the field-trialing of new wheat strains). Wheat is one of our most important and widespread food crops, and crop breeding programmes develop new strains to try to further increase yields even under demanding environmental (e.g. drought-prone) and management (e.g. reduced fertiliser) conditions. The objective of this PhD is to develop the use of remote sensing and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology for improving field phentotyping methods, both in the UK and in more drought prone areas overseas.
The project is a BBSRC CASE PhD Studentship with King's College London, conducted in collaboration with Rothamsted Research and Bayer CropScience AG. The project will be jointly supervised by Prof. Martin Wooster (KCL), Dr Malcolm Hawkesford (Rothamsted) and Dr Juan Pedro Ruiz-Santaella (Bayer CropScience AG).
PhD to commence between Jan 2015 and end Sept 2015. Will thus suit recently graduated MSc student OR student currently on MSc programme.

PhD position at TU Delft, The Netherlands:
?Coupled modeling of Greenland ice sheet and global climate evolution?
Description: The Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) is currently losing mass in
response to atmospheric and ocean warming. The candidate will
investigate the interactions between the GrIS and the climate system
with the Community Earth System Model, the first global climate model
that simulates realistically ice sheet surface processes (e.g. surface
melt, albedo). The project goal is to examine the role of natural
climate variability vs. anthropogenic forcing, melt-albedo feedback,
changes in cloud cover and sea ice on the current and future evolution
of the Greenland ice sheet and its climate.
Requirements: Candidates must have a background in Meteorology, Physics
and/or Fluid Dynamics. High programming and analytical skills,
experience in advanced statistical analysis, and good English oral and
writing skills are required. Experience in meteorology, climate dynamics
and/or glaciology is desirable.
We offer: full-time position for four years at the Department of
Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Delft University of Technology
www.grs.citg.delft.nl <http://www.grs.citg.delft.nl/>.
The project will be co-supervised by Dr. Jan Lenaerts from the Institute
for Marine and Atmospheric Research at Utrecht University. The candidate
will collaborate with colleagues in the US and present results in CESM
meetings and international conferences.
Application: Please send cover letter, CV and contact details of at
least two referees to supervisor Miren Vizcaino, M.Vizcaino@tudelft.nl
<mailto:M.Vizcaino@tudelft.nl>, with subject ?PhD Application: Coupled
GrIS/climate modeling? before 10th Nov 2014.

Research fellow (PhD candidate) in atmospheric dynamics and climate
modelling
The Geophysical Institute at the University of Bergen has a vacancy for
a research fellow (PhD candidate) in atmospheric dynamics and climate
modelling. The candidate will use a combination of paleo proxy data,
historical data, instrumental data, theory, diagnostics, and climate
models to improve our understanding of climatic variability, in
particular with respect to the atmospheric water cycle, in the East
Asian region on interannual to centennial time scales. The position is
associated with the research group in meteorology and the Bjerknes
Centre for Climate Research. The fellowship position is for a fixed term
of 4 years, of which 25% will comprise mandatory work such as teaching
and/or administrative tasks. Being part of an ongoing research
collaboration between Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research and the
Nansen-Zhu International Research Center in Beijing, China, the position
will involve a research stay in Beijing of minimum 6 months.
Further details on the project and qualification requirements, contact
information, as well as a link to the application form can be found at

LBNL Arctic Fluxes Postdoctoral Fellow - 79910
Organization: ES-Earth Sciences
The Earth Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral scientist who will work with a team of scientists studying ecosystem response to warming in Alaska as part of the Next Generation Ecosystem Experiment (NGEE) Arctic (http://ngee-arctic.ornl.gov/). The Postdoctoral scientist will make field measurements of CO2 and CH4 fluxes with portable chambers and an eddy covariance system across a climate gradient in Alaska. You will maintain instruments, plan measurement campaigns, and integrate observations with data on vegetation, energy fluxes, and geophysics. The successful candidate will be able to generate high quality data independently and write interesting papers of their design on, for example, process-level responses, footprint analysis and uncertainty, scaling, or modeling testing and applications. You will be responsible for running an eddy-covariance system and archiving data, as well as integrating observations collected by the larger team to develop empirical assessments and test models.
To be considered, please submit your CV including 1-2 publications, and contact information for 3 references must be provided.

MetraWeather is a well-respected, global weather provider with over 250 employees.
MetraWeather Americas is looking to potentially expand its aviation forecast operations into Northern South America. At this stage, we merely seek expressions of interest from highly motivated degreed meteorologists with superb communications skills able to produce aerodrome forecasts, develop weather graphics and brief airline decision makers on the threats that weather poses to its operations. A meteorology degree and fluency in English is required; forecast experience and fluency in Spanish is desirable. A willingness and ability to work weekends and shifts is needed too.
If this opportunity eventuates, interested parties will need to be able to travel to New Zealand for a three month training program.
If you are interested in learning more, please contact Don Berchoff, MetraWeather 's VP Americas & Transport at don.berchoff@metraweather.com<mailto:don.berchoff@metraweather.com>
