A funded MASc position is available in the Department of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo under the supervision of Professor Andrea Scott (ka3scott@uwaterloo.ca). The project objective is to assimilate data from ocean gliders into a model of the North Atlantic. The work will be carried out as part of a larger research network VITALS (Ventilation, Interactions and Transports Across the Labrador Sea) http://knossos.eas.ualberta.ca/vitals/. The research network will answer fundamental questions about exchanges of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and heat between the atmosphere and the Labrador Sea, in order to improve our understanding of deep convection. The project will involve close collaboration between researchers at the University of Waterloo, McGill University, Memorial University and the University of Alberta.

Interested applicants should send their CV, academic transcripts and contact details for two references to ka3scott@uwaterloo.ca. Students should have previous degree in Engineering or Oceanography or Applied Mathematics and experience with one of C/C++ Fortran or Python. Any questions regarding the project can be directed to ka3scott@uwaterloo.ca. Anticipated start date is September 2015, or sooner.

Research Associate II
(Intern)
14-125

The Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at Colorado State University (CSU) seeks to fill 2 internship positions as part of a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) award intended to increase the number of experts in the field of data assimilation. Both internships, located at CIRA in Fort Collins, Colorado, will be for one year and will cover practical and theoretical training. Both Interns will serve as members of a Data Assimilation Group and will learn how to use several NOAA models and novel data assimilation techniques. Both Interns must be able to travel to visit the relevant NOAA labs as well as attend domestic meetings and workshops. For complete position description and qualification requirements, visit http://www.cira.colostate.edu/cira-employment/14-125-research-associate-ii-intern. Full consideration date is December 1, 2014 by 11:59 MST. Apply electronically by sending a resume, cover letter, and the names of three references to the attention of Human Resources Manager at the following email address: cira_hr@mail.colostate.edu<mailto:cira_hr@mail.colostate.edu>. Please put your last name and 14-125 in the subject line of the e-mail. References will not be contacted without prior notification of candidates. Colorado State University conducts background checks on all final candidates. CSU is an EO/EA/AA employer.

http://www.reading.ac.uk/about/jobs/about-job-details.aspx?vacancy_id=4911057xEP

The University of Reading, as part of a consortium of European climate
experts, is developing the Climate Impacts Platform for Copernicus
(CLIPC), a "one-stop-shop" for climate impacts information. This post
will play a very important role in bringing Earth Observation (EO)
datasets into CLIPC, by working closely with EO experts in the European
Space Agency's Climate Change Initiative (CCI), and transforming their
outputs to support climate impact analysis.

You will have:

- Expertise in developing code for scientific research

- Experience in handling large environmental datasets

- A strong interest in applied/translational science

- The ability to engage with end users of research as well as leading
academics

Closing date: 7th December
Interviews to be held: 15th December

The Air Chemistry Department at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC) in Mainz invites applications for a

POSTDOC POSITION ON EMISSIONS FROM GAS FLARING

Emissions of black carbon and other smoke constituents from industrial gas flares are still poorly quantified, despite playing an important role for the climate and air quality. The successful candidate will develop and apply innovative algorithms for the calculation of global emission rates of gas flares from the infrared observations of ESA?s new Sentinel-3 satellite, augmented with further ESA, DLR and NOAA satellites. This work will contribute to ESA?s satelite calibration activities and lay the foundations for an operational implementation in EU?s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service.

The successful candidates must have
? a PhD in physics or a related discipline,
? experience the analysis of large datasets,
? experience with programming in Python, shell, Fortran, C, C++ and or similar ? mathematical problem-solving skills,
? working knowledge of the English language,
? and the ability to work self-reliantly.

The following would be further advantages: experience with remote sensing and satellite data, knowledge of atmospheric physics and chemistry or gas flaring, peer-reviewed publications, good communications skills, and knowledge of the German language.

The work will be carried out in the Fire Emissions group, in close collaboration with the Satellite Research and Global Modelling groups at MPIC, and DLR, ESA, ECMWF, CNRS and Zebris GmbH. (http://www.mpic.de/forschung/atmosphaerenchemie/gruppe-kaiser.html)

Payment and benefits will be according to the German TV?D payscale, TV?D 13. Initial appointment is for 1 year, renewal by 1.5 years will be possible upon mutual satisfaction.

The Max Planck Society wishes to increase the number of female coworkers, and applications by women are particularly encouraged. The Max-Planck-Society has set itself the objective of employing more people with disabilities. Applications from people with disabilities are expressly encouraged.

Please send your application (1-2 pages), CV, list of publications and contact details of two referees by 10 December 2014 to Johannes Kaiser <j.kaiser@mpic.de>.
