Position Summary:

Common ash (Fraxinus excelsior) is a native broadleaf tree species in Ireland that is now threatened by the emerging lethal disease of ash dieback. This project, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, aims to quantify the airborne dispersal pathways of the disease over Ireland and to communicate the results to the general public and policy makers. The post-doctoral fellow will be mentored at UCD Dublin by Dr Jon Yearsley (ecological modeller) and Prof. Maarten Nieuwenhuis (UCD Forestry) and collaborate with the Department of Plant Sciences (University of Cambridge) and the UK Met Office. The project will combine the UK Met Office?s dispersion model with meteorological data, known locations of ash dieback infections and the biology of ash dieback disease. The project will involve visits to the UK Met Office (Exeter) and the University of Cambridge.

This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator. The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.
