Dear all,
the Leibniz-Institute for Tropospheric Research e.V. (TROPOS) in Leipzig (Germany) is seeking a PhD student or a postdoctoral scientist in the field of coupled atmosphere-ocean modeling.
The major task will be to construct a high-resolution regional coupled ocean-atmosphere model with focus on consistent simulations of air-sea fluxes. This will be carried out in close collaboration with another PhD student located at the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (IOW) in Warnem?nde. The PhD student or postdoctoral scientist at TROPOS will implement the atmospheric component while the other student will concentrate on the ocean model component. A main focus will be an energy-consistent two-way coupling at the air-water interface. Further research areas are mass consistent grid interpolation, optimized grid generation and handling of models with different timescales. The model systems will be applied to the Western Africa.
The open position is limited to three years. The salary level is according to the German public service regulation (TV-L 13) at 65% full-time-equivalent if the position is filled with a PhD candidate or at 75% full-time-equivalent if the position is filled at postdoctoral level. The position will start ideally on 1 May 2015 or soon thereafter.
Applicants should have a background in atmospheric physics, meteorology, numerical mathematics, or fluid dynamics. A specific interest in numerical mathematics and scientific computing is advantageous. Good English language skills and the willingness to work in a collaborative environment are required.
We are offering the possibility to work at a highly renowned atmospheric research institute, and in one of the most attractive cities in Germany.
Female researchers are encouraged to apply. Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, preference will be given to a disabled person.
Please send your application including your CV until 31. March 2015 to:

EUPORIAS First Climate Services Masterclass: Energy, Tourism, Agriculture in
a changing climate. Eurac. Bolzano/Bozen, Italy, 18-22 May , 2015
EUPORIAS is launching a climate service master class for this coming spring.
Climate service development require a new framework for the interaction
between users and provider of climate information. The EUPORIAS first
climate service masterclass wants to be a first step in the direction of
co-production where new climate services prototypes could be developed but,
more importantly, where new protocol for interaction could be explain and
presented in a hands-on fashion.
This is a one-week event for postgraduates and early career research
scientists from any discipline and for representatives of the public and
private sectors with an interest in climate related issues from seasonal to
longer time scales.
The masterclass is organized with general lectures in the morning and
hand-on sessions during the afternoons about Energy, Tourism, Agriculture
sectors. Participants will work together in small interdisciplinary groups
throughout the week to develop specific prototypes taking advantage of the
lessons learnt and the innovative tools developed in the most recent
European initiatives
More information about the course can be found at

Director, Laboratory of Tree?Ring Research
University of Arizona, Tucson
We seek a new Director for one of the most influential dendrochronology
laboratories in the world. The Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research (LTRR)
at the University of Arizona is recognized as an international leader in
dendrochronological research in climate science, archaeology,
biogeochemistry, ecology, hydrology and physical geography. To carry
this legacy forward, in our new purpose-built facilities, we seek a
leader and scholar with a broad interdisciplinary vision. The new
Director will strengthen existing programs and build new ones within a
University renowned for its accomplishments in the natural, physical,
and social sciences. We seek a candidate who will build upon the lab?s
traditions of academic excellence, high impact research,
interdisciplinary mentorship of students and post-docs and international
collaborations. The director will be expected to lead a team of
approximately 75 faculty, staff, and students, manage an annual budget
of $3-4 million, and work with the Dean of the College of Science and
other university leaders to develop new initiatives and programs. It is
further expected that the Director will contribute to the research,
teaching and outreach missions of the LTRR and the university, and will
represent the science of dendrochronology in traditional and innovative
ways ? on campus, in public forums, through media interactions and to a
global network of colleagues. The Director will build upon the LTRR?s
successful record in securing financial support not only from Federal
funding agencies but also from private and institutional donors.
The Director is expected to hold a Ph.D degree or equivalent, and will
be appointed at the level of tenured Full Professor in the LTRR. This is
a 9- month appointment with salary and start-up funds commensurate with
experience, accomplishments and needs. The LTRR is a unit of the College
of Science and is the primary tenure home for most of its faculty.
Strong collaborative links, including joint faculty appointments, also
exist between the LTRR and departments in several other colleges of the
University. As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, the
University of Arizona recognizes the power of a diverse community and
strongly encourages applications from individuals with varied
experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds.
The Search Committee will begin reviewing applications on March 1, 2015.
Applications should consist of a statement of vision, a statement of
research and teaching accomplishments, a full curriculum vitae, and
three letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation should
specifically address the candidate's potential for leadership of an
interdisciplinary and international institute such as the LTRR. To
submit an application, please use the following web link
(<https://www.uacareertrack.com/>) and refer to Job Number 57183.
Inquiries about the position should be sent to Russell Monson (Chair of
the Search Committee) at <russmonson@email.arizona.edu>.
