The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary centre for climate research located in Hamburg, Germany. It has an internationally recognised reputation in climate modelling. Within the DFG project GWING (Gravity Wave Interactions in the Global Atmosphere) part of the MS-GWaves (Multi-Scale Dynamics of Gravity Waves) Research Unit, we are looking for a
Postdoctoral Scientist (m/f, SAS2015-11)
with a strong background in climate modelling and analysis, numerical mathematics, or computational science. Within the department "The Atmosphere in the Earth System", the successful applicant will establish and improve the atmospheric general circulation ICON model. His/her tasks will be the development and analysis of a gravity wave (GW) permitting version of the ICON mode, i.e. a high-resolution version covering the atmosphere from the surface to the lower thermosphere. The analysis will focus on case studies of GWs, their sources, and their effects on the circulation. The task will be performed in close collaboration with partners from several other German research institutions.
A PhD in applied mathematics, meteorology, oceanography, physics, or computational science is required for this position. Previous working experience in and/or in-depth understanding of the modelling of atmospheric dynamics is of advantage. The applicant should additionally have expertise in scientific computing, including programming skills (Fortran or Unix-type platforms and shell scripting).
The MPI-M is located in the heart of one of Europe's most liveable and vibrant cities. It provides a highly international and interdisciplinary environment for conducting scientific research as well as access to state-of-the-art scientific facilities. For further information, please contact Dr. Hauke Schmidt (hauke.schmidt(at)mpimet.mpg.de) or Dr. Elisa Manzini (elisa.manzini(at) mpimet.mpg.de). Applications should be forwarded to the address indicated below.
The position is initially offered for two years starting in early 2015. Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TV?D E14), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service. The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientist and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.
The selection process will start on 23 March 2015 and will continue until the position is filled. Please submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of two references via E-Mail: jobs@vw.mpimet.mpg.de<mailto:jobs@vw.mpimet.mpg.de> (pdf-attachments max. 5 MB only).
