Assistant or Associate Professor ? Radiative Transfer / Remote Sensing
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon
State University invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE),
12-month, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor with a focus on
radiative transfer and/or remote sensing.
We seek a new faculty member who will develop and maintain a vigorous,
externally funded research program in remote sensing and/or modeling of
processes directly linked to the Earth?s radiative energy budget. This
position is motivated by the core importance of radiative transfer in
the study of atmospheric processes and climate. Specific areas of
research could include but are not restricted to: (1) Remote sensing of
the atmosphere and surface fluxes; (2) Examining the radiative effects
of aerosols and clouds on climate; (3) Designing and implementing remote
sensing algorithms and methods; and (4) Developing parameterizations for
clouds and radiative transfer in atmospheric models. The successful
candidate will complement existing CEOAS research programs in
atmosphere-ocean interaction, climate variability and change, and
analysis of satellite and in situ observations. The successful candidate
will also participate in the CEOAS undergraduate and graduate teaching
program and may contribute to teaching courses in radiative transfer,
remote sensing techniques, climate dynamics, and atmospheric physics.
Advising and mentoring graduate students and/or post-doctoral scholars
is also expected from the candidate.
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is an
internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an
integrated system. It operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories
and two oceanographic research vessels, the 177-foot ocean-going Oceanus
and the 54-foot coastal research vessel, Elakha. The College has an
annual budget of more than $50 million, with support coming from the
National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other
federal agencies. It has more than 100 faculty, 200 graduate students
and 600 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include Master's and
PhD degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; and
Geography and a Master's degree in Marine Resource Management. The
college has undergraduate programs in Earth Sciences and Environmental
Sciences, with several minors and certificate programs.
OSU has an institution-wide commitment to diversity, multiculturalism,

workforce and student body that includes members of historically
underrepresented groups. We strive to build and sustain a welcoming and
supportive campus environment. OSU provides outstanding leadership
opportunities for people interested in promoting and enhancing
diversity, nurturing creativity and building community.
Appointment: Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with
experience. There is an expectation that the successful candidate will
secure funding to support 60% of his/her full-time salary. For a
12-month position it is CEOAS policy to confer indefinite tenure when
promoted to full Professor. Should indefinite tenure be granted, the
appointment will be on a 9-month basis, as are all CEOAS indefinite
tenure agreements.
The OSU benefit package includes several options for health/dental/life
insurance, retirement, as well as a program for reduced tuition for
qualified dependent.

*Third Annual*
*Summer School in Sustainable Climate Risk Management*
*for postdocs and advanced graduate students*
3-7 August 2015 at Penn State University
The Network for Sustainable Climate Risk Management (SCRiM
<http://scrimhub.org/about.php>) links an international, transdisciplinary
team of climate scientists, economists, philosophers, statisticians,
engineers, and policy analysts to answer the question, *?What are
sustainable, scientifically sound, technologically feasible, economically
efficient, and ethically defensible climate risk management strategies??*
As a central part of its educational and research mission, SCRiM hosts an
annual summer school to foster opportunities for collaboration and to
provide a solid foundation in the broad, multidisciplinary knowledge,
tools, and methods of the diverse fields participating in the network.
A key focus of the workshop will be developing a common vocabulary to help
foster enhanced cross-disciplinary communication, enabling the possibility
for future collaborative research. Participants will also gain hands-on
experience with key methods and tools including robust decisionmaking, use
of simple models, and analysis of relevant datasets.
Lodging and meals are provided for all participants. In most cases, we are
also able to provide full travel support.
*This program is targeted at advanced graduate students and postdocs.* However,
in special circumstances, we may be willing to consider applications from
other early-career professionals who have recently completed their master?s
