Job Description: Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a center for research in a wide range of scientific disciplines, including climate science, space exploration, geophysics, renewable energy, supercomputing, medicine, and nanotechnology. The Computer, Computational, and Statistical Sciences (CCS) Division is a vibrant scientific research and development organization working in multiple mission areas of Los Alamos National Laboratory, including its climate program.
The Computational Physics Group, CCS-2, seeks a postdoctoral researcher to work on the development and application of advanced solvers for the fast equilibration of "tracers" that are carried along with the circulation in ocean climate models. This exciting technology is being applied to state-of-the-art models, and promises to become a powerful tool in numerical ocean analysis for a class of climate science problems in which equilibration is slow. Areas of interest include the study of water mass ventilation, pathways and transit times, as well as marine biogeochemistry, with an emphasis on resolved (eddying) simulations of the high latitude oceans.
The ideal candidate would combine a background in physical or biogeochemical oceanography with an interest in applied math and experience in numerical modeling. But any strong candidate with an interest in oceanography and a doctorate in a relevant field like mathematics, physics, computational science, or atmospheric sciences will be given serious consideration.
The position is within the Climate, Ocean, and Sea Ice Modeling (COSIM) team, which develops model components for use on high-performance computing platforms and applies those models to climate problems. This work will be in collaboration with Drs. Francois Primeau (UC Irvine) and Keith Lindsay (NCAR).
The position is dependent on availability of funding.
Minimum Job Requirements:
* Expertise in ocean modeling, climate modeling, computational fluid dynamics, geophysical fluid dynamics, or related field.
* Strong computational skills.
* Experience with complex numerical models.
* Familiarity with applied mathematics.
* Ability to effectively communicate technical work in presentations and peer-reviewed journals.
Desired Skills:
* Expertise in physical oceanography or marine biogeochemistry.
* Experience with implicit numerical solvers (we make use of the Newton-Krylov approach).
Education: PhD in related field completed within the past five years or soon to be completed.
Notes to Applicants: In addition to applying on-line at http://www.lanl.gov/careers/career-options/jobs/index.php, interested candidates should send their application package (cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, and names and contact information of three references) to Wilbert Weijer (wilbert@lanl.gov<mailto:wilbert@lanl.gov>). Review of applications will start April 15, 2015, and continue until the position is filled.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a pre-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Candidates may be considered for a Director's Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Marie Curie, Richard P. Feynman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Fellowships.
