NCEO Radiation and Rainfall Scientist
University of Leicester
College of Science and Engineering
Department of Physics and Astronomy

Salary Grade 7- ?32,277 to ?37,394 per annum
Fixed term contract until 30 April 2017
PostDoc position: starts in May 2015.

We are seeking an enthusiastic post-doc to work on the development of cloud and precipitation retrievals by combining observations from the NASA CloudSat and the NASA-JAXA Global Precipitation Measuring mission satellites in preparation for the ESA EarthCARE mission. The position is funded by the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO).
The post is full time until 30 April 2017, but may be extended to 5 years, depending on the continuation of the NCEO contract.

The NASA CloudSat and the NASA-JAXA Global Precipitation Measuring mission satellites are currently in orbit carrying cloud and precipitation radars ranging from Ku to W band (for details visit http://cloudsat.atmos.colostate.edu/ and http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/GPM/main/). The combination of their observations has the potential to provide a holistic understanding of the transitioning from cloud to precipitation. The GPM-core and the A-Train suite of sensors combined with GEO-IR measurements offer unprecedented observations of convective and warm rain precipitation processes. Changes in the properties of their associated cloud systems can have radical impacts on both the local and the large scale. These cloud feedbacks are known to represent one of the key uncertainties in climate predictions of global warming. The novel observations at convective scale (footprints of the instruments are 4 km and below) are critical to improve the evaluation and the development of LargeEddySimulations and CloudResolvingModels, a critical step for understanding and representing such processes across a wider range of scales and for improving the numerical representations of how clouds, moist convection, and heating couple to the general circulation.

The main duties of this post are twofold.
1) Analyse and improve GPM radar products in deep convective clouds and combine them with additional datasets (e.g. aerosols load taken from the Global and Regional Earth-System Monitoring, GEO-IR observations) in order to understand main drivers of convective invigoration.
2) Explore the deficiencies and the strengths of the multi-frequency radars on the GPM core satellite and of the CloudSat W-band radar by extracting collocated overpasses of the two satellites. Special focus will be devoted at assessing and improving the 2C-CloudSat products for warm precipitation by the addition of the CloudSat brightness temperature as an additional constraint in the retrieval which currently uses just the radar reflectivity and the path integrated attenuation revealed by the reduced sea-surface return in areas of precipitation.

Candidates should have a doctoral degree in meteorology or a related geophysical science, with a strong background in physics and mathematics. They must have excellent programming skills (e.g. matlab, idl, Fortran), and experience in the scientific analysis of satellite datasets. Experience of analysing rainfall datasets and in retrieval techniques would be an advantage. Candidates must be willing to write reports for and give presentations to NCEO partners and to write up the main scientific outcomes of the project in peer-reviewed journal publications.
There will be ample opportunities for collaboration during this project, with NCEO scientists (specifically the cloud radar group at Reading) and colleagues at ECMWF working on cloud, aerosol and precipitation retrievals in preparation for the ESA EarthCARE mission.

Dear all,

The University of Oklahoma is seeking a candidate to fill a post-doc position. The successful candidate will apply data assimilation techniques to improve the Community Land Model (CLM) with data from ecological observations, eddy covariance network, and greenhouse gas observing satellites?particularly total column carbon dioxide from OCO-2.

Attached please find the detailed description of the position. For further information about the position, please contact Dr. Sean Crowell at scrowell@ou.edu<mailto:scrowell@ou.edu> or Dr. Yiqi Luo at yluo@ou.edu<mailto:yluo@ou.edu>.

Sincerely,

Sean
