Researcher on regional reanalysis and data assimilation, ref. no. 651
http://www.smhi.se/en/about-smhi/career-and-jobs/job-opportunities/researcher-on-regional-reanalysis-and-data-assimilation-ref-no-651-1.86575

The research department of SMHI consists of about 100 researchers funded both internally and externally. We work normally in projects with focus on applied research, quality insurance and long-term perspective. The work environment is characterized by flexible working arrangements, responsibility and personal development. The unit "Meteorological Analysis and Prediction" conducts research and development of weather prediction models, assimilation of observations and applications of forecast data for Scandinavia and Europe. Today the group consists of 11 researchers. Information on the group can be found here: http://www.smhi.se/en/research/research-departments/analysis-and-prediction.

We are seeking a researcher for a two-year position in the field of meteorology or related area who will strengthen our research activities within regional reanalysis and data assimilation. The work contains assimilation in our modelling system HARMONIE for regional reanalysis within the externally funded project UERRA (Uncertainties in Ensembles of Regional ReAnalysis, http://www.uerra.eu/) and for the operational weather forecast. Furthermore, the employed scientist will contribute to UERRA with running and monitoring model runs, and with data analysis for reports. In the longer run we plan that the scientist will also work on the development of future data assimilation systems with flow-dependent error statistics. Software systems are developed in Fortran, R and Python. We use Unix / Linux on high-performance cluster computers as well as on desktop computers. The employed scientist will work closely with the other scientists of the group.

Your profile

The announced position requires knowledge of the physical, mathematical, and numerical aspects of complex physical systems such as weather prediction models. The work will include scientific publishing, support for production in ongoing projects, and the creation / maintenance of national / international networks. In addition, the job requires experience and interest in programming, in working with large systems and with a lot of data.

We attach great importance that you are goal-oriented and have a methodical approach. You should take responsibility for progressing your own work. As the work is done in close collaboration with the group of modelers at SMHI and with colleagues at other institutions within and outside Europe, high level of English is required both in spoken and written form. The position is limited to two years based in Norrk?ping.

Do you want to know more?

If you want to know more, please contact Head of Unit "Meteorological Research" Heiner K?rnich (heiner.kornich@smhi.se<mailto:heiner.kornich@smhi.se>). All can be reached at phone 011-495 8000 or via email Firstname.Lastname@smhi.se.

Your application
