PhD position in microscale interaction of oil with sea ice (IVT-54/15)
at
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)
Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology
Department of Civil and Transport Engineering

A fully funded 3-year PhD position is available on the microscale
interaction of oil with sea ice. Work includes state-of-the art pore
space imaging based on X-ray micro-tomography with laboratory X-ray
tubes as well as synchrotron radiation, laboratory and field experiments
of oil-in-ice interactions during ice growth and melt, quantitative
image analysis, and modelling. Interactions of oil with sea ice are key
to oil detection with remote sensing technologies, prioritizing response
efforts, and they are part of the planning process of offshore operations.

The candidate will be part of an international research program,
performing experiments in Trondheim, Narvik, Grenoble, Hamburg, and
Alaska or Svalbard. Employment is through the Norwegian University of
Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim where the candidate will work
in close collaboration with a post-doctoral fellow. The project is
funded by the Research Council of Norway, titled ?Microscale interaction
of oil with sea ice for detection and environmental risk management in
sustainable operations (MOSIDEO)? (http://mosideo.no/).

Candidates with a master degree within physics, geophysics, applied
mathematics, applied mechanics or related fields are encouraged to
apply. Background on project-related topics like fluid flow in porous
media, glaciology and sea ice, or X-ray micro-tomography will be an
advantage. The candidate needs to have solid knowledge in data and image
processing and programming (e.g. Matlab, Python). Self-motivation,
willingness and availability to travel for several weeks at a time
(e.g., laboratory work at synchrotron facilities in Grenoble and
Hamburg, field work in the Arctic), and interest in the design of
laboratory experiments as part of the scientific method are crucial.

The PhD candidate will be hosted by the Department of Civil and
Transport Engineering at NTNU and supervised by Prof. Knut H?yland
(NTNU), Dr. S?nke Maus (NTNU) and PI Dr. Chris Petrich (Norut Narvik).
For further information about the position please contact Dr S?nke Maus,
e-mail sonke.maus@ntnu.no, phone +47 92 43 60 20.

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim
represents academic eminence in technology and the natural sciences as
well as in other academic disciplines ranging from the social sciences,
the arts, medicine, teacher education, architecture to fine art.
Cross-disciplinary cooperation results in innovative breakthroughs and
creative solutions with far-reaching social and economic impact.

Job title PhD position (Early Career Researcher)

Application online <https://jobs.exeter.ac.uk>, quoting Job reference P48225
Application closing date 28/04/2015

Job description
College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences,
University of Exeter, UK

The College wishes to recruit an Early Career Researcher to support
the work of Prof. P. Friedlingstein on the EU-ITN C-CASCADES
project. This Horizon 2020 Innovative Training Networks funded post
is available immediately for 36 months. The successful applicant
will develop a new representation of lateral transfer of Dissolved
Organic Carbon (DOC) from land to the river system in JULES.

The post will include original model developments in JULES, the land
surface model of the Met Office Hadley Centre Earth system model, in
order to have a realistic representation of DOC production in
terrestrial soils and its export to the river network by leaching.
The model will be evaluated using river discharge DOC data for large
rivers across the world, with a potential focus on a key specific
region (e;g. Arctic or Tropics). Simulations will be performed with
the major historical forcing (climate, atmospheric CO2, nitrogen
deposition, and land-use changes) in order to estimate the changes
of DOC export and their attribution to anthropogenic activities.

Applicants will possess an undergraduate degree (2:1 or above) or
equivalent in physical, mathematical or environmental sciences and
must be eligible to be appointed as an Early Stage Researcher in the
UK under the Horizon 2020 Innovative Training Scheme. This is
currently defined as;

Be in the first four years (full time equivalent) of their research
careers starting at the date of obtaining a degree formally
entitling them to embark on a doctorate in the UK or in the country
where they obtained their degree.

Not have or be currently studying towards a PhD.

Have not resided or carried out their professional activities in the
UK for more than twelve months in the three years immediately prior
to their appointment (if successful in this application).

Under the rules of the scheme European and International
applications are welcomed, subject to the UK Border Agency
regulations on the Right to Work in the UK. Usually nationals and/or
residents of the UK are excluded from the scheme, however this can
be checked by referring to the current Horizon 2020 Marie Sk?odowska
Curie Work Programme, which can downloaded from
<http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/opportunities/h2020/calls/h2020-msca-itn-2015.html#tab2>

All candidates will receive a salary plus living and mobility
allowances. A family allowance may also be available, subject to
eligibility of candidates.

Salary and allowances will be paid in sterling (the GBP value of
salary plus allowances _will vary over the period of employment
according to the GBP:EUR exchange rate_). At the exchange rate of
GBP 0.72: EUR 1 (at date of advertising), salary plus allowances
would be: GBP 19,632 (salary); GBP 3,549 (living allowance); GBP
5,648 (mobility allowance). (Salary and allowances are subject to
employee's tax/NI/pension deductions as applicable).

The successful applicant will be enrolled on a PhD and will use the
research undertaken as part of their studies.

For further information please contact Prof. Pierre Friedlingstein,
e-mail p.friedlingstein@exeter.ac.uk
<mailto:p.friedlingstein@exeter.ac.uk> .
