Three research associate positions are available at University of Leicester funded by the National Centre for Earth Observations (NCEO)
NCEO is a distributed NERC centre of over 80 scientists from UK Universities and research organisations. NCEO provides NERC (The Natural Environment Research Council) with National Capability in Earth Observation (EO) science and incorporates world-class capabilities in interpretive EO.
Postdoctoral Research Associate in Evaluation of Climate models with Satellite Data (one year)
This post is for one year to examine the evaluation of climate models with satellite data, initially using the CMIP5 archive of climate model data. The focus of the activity will be on physical atmosphere and polar connections, but land-atmosphere interactions will also be of interest. The work will build on the multiple EO data sets of high quality available through NCEO and its collaborators, and NCEO expertise in comparing data and models. It is expected that there will be further opportunities at the end of the project to earn further employment on new projects evaluating next generation climate and Earth system models.

Research Associate in Earth Observation for Forests (9 months)
The position exists to develop and apply forest change detection methods to better understand the ability of different remote sensors and algorithms to accurately detect deforestation, degradation and regrowth in different forest ecosystems. The project is performed in the context of the UK International Partnership Space Programme (IPSP) in collaboration with Mexico and Brazil, as an industrial-academic study led by Ecometrica and also involving NCEO Edinburgh. In addition to testing methods, the RA will gain valuable experience through project reports and project meetings. The position will be based with NCEO staff in the Centre for Landscape and Climate Research at Leicester.

Postdoctoral Research Associate on formaldehyde observations from satellites (one year)
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to further evolve the formaldehyde satellite retrieval from the GOME-2 instrument that has been developed within NCEO (Hewson et al., AMT, 2013; Hewson et al., AMTD, 2015). The satellite dataset will then be used to evaluate biogenic emissions and the main climatic drivers for year-to-year variations. The post holder will work closely with NCEO groups who run state-of-the-art land surface and atmospheric transport models (University of Edinburgh and Leeds).

We have an opening for a Postdoc at the National Center for Atmospheric
Research (NCAR), Boulder, Colorado, U.S., on air quality (AQ) modeling and
data assimilation. This is a 2 1/2 years position fully funded by
the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The goal to improve the current AQ prediction capabilities of the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) / National Centers for
Environmental Prediction (NCEP), which are distributed daily across the U.S.
The successfully candidates will use the Community Gridpoint Statistical
Interpolation (GSI) system to assimilate surface and satellite data to
improve ground-level ozone and PM2.5 predictions based on the Community
Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model.

A postdoctoral fellow position is available at the University of
Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI, USA) in the research group of Prof. Kerri Pratt
in the Department of Chemistry.The research will focus on
one-dimensional modeling of Arctic atmospheric chemistry, with emphasis
on halogen chemistry and snowpack photochemistry. Model results will be
compared to field data from chemical ionization mass spectrometry
measurements. This position is part of a National Science Foundation
grant to improve our understanding of near-surface halogen chemistry
under changing snow and sea ice conditions. The one-dimensional model
MISTRA will be utilized in collaboration with Prof. Roland von Glasow at
the University of East Anglia. The position will also include assisting
in the development of a general chemistry laboratory course focused on
snow chemistry research, as part of an educational grant funded by the
Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
A PhD in atmospheric science, chemistry, or a related area is required,
as well as strong written and oral communication skills. Prior
experience with one-dimensional or chemical transport modeling is
desired. An interest in teaching is desired for participation in course
development. The postdoctoral position is expected to be for two years;
initial appointment will be for one year, with likely renewal, pending
demonstrated progress. Preferred start date is August or early September
2015.
