Freie Universit?t Berlin
Institute of Meteorology
Prof. Dr. Uwe Ulbrich / Dr. Henning Rust

Regional climate modeller (Postdoc, 30 months)
Stochastic modeller (Postdoc, 30 months)
Extreme value statistics (PhD, 36 months)

Two post-doc and one PhD positions are available in the frame of the
EU funded project BINGO (Bringing INnovation to onGOing Management - a
better future under climate change). The project aims at providing
practical knowledge and tools to water managers affected by climate
change to better cope with climate projections and near-term climate
predictions (decadal predictions). The work package led by the
Institute of Meteorology of Freie Universit?t Berlin will particularly
address hydrological extreme conditions within climate
change scenarios and decadal climate predictions, focusing on six
representative areas across Europe.

*Regional climate modeller (Postdoc, 30 months)*
The successful applicant will identify extremal weather patterns and
associated relevant parameters for part of the catchments, collect
existing simulations from COSMO-CLM and other RCMs as well as GCMs from
various archives and process the available climate data towards a
format accessible for hydrological modelling. They will set up and
run nested simulations with the regional climate model COSMO-CLM for
the EURO-CORDEX region, quality controlling the results, implenent
and apply multivariate bias correction methods for those quantities
relevant for hydrological modelling. Besides the general requirements
listed below, the successful applicant has experience in diagnosing
climate extremes, usingglobal and regional models, in particular related to
hydrological extremes, statistical post-processing methods (e.g. bias
correction), and in regional climate modeling, preferably with
COSMO-CLM.

*Stochastic modeller (Postdoc, 30months)*
The successful applicant will develop a precipitation-guided weather
generator for high-resolution spatio-temporal fields of meteorological
quantities relevant to hydrological modelling. The precipitation
component will be based on spatial variants of Poisson-cluster
models. Model parameters will be estimated from guage-based
obsevations as well as from spatial fields of radar
reflectivities. All components of the weather generator will
be conditioned on large scale atmospheric drivers to allow a
downscaling of climate projections. Besides the general requirements
listed below, the successful applicant has experience in stochastic
modelling and ideally some experience with stochastic weather
generators.

*Extreme value statistics (PhD, 36months)*
The successful applicant will identifying episodes with extreme
conditions for hydrological systems from global climate simulations
for part of the catchments and characterising these episodes with
measures for their hydrological severeness and with a probability of
occurence. They wil quantifiy exceedance probabilities for
precipitation events of various durations for several research sites
in Europe. Based on extreme value statistics,
intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) relationships are estimated at
sites and in space. Linking these relationships to atmospheric drivers
for downscaling of climate projections. Besides
the general requirements listed below, the successful applicant has
good knowledge in extreme value statistics.

*All successful applicants*
have a university degree (Master, Diploma) in Meteorology, Physics,
Applied Mathematics or a related field. They are experienced in using
computer environments (Linux, shell, data bases, handling of climate
model output, e.g. CDO), modern environments of statistical computing,
perferably R and publish and present scientific results. Ideally they
have experience with the requirements of hydrological modelling.
