The Potsdam-Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) is looking for a
Research Scientist
within Research Domain 2 (Climate Impacts and Vulnerabilities). The
successful candidate will work in direct collaboration with Dr Douglas
Maraun (GEOMAR Kiel, Wegener Center Graz). The main place of work will
be at PIK, but visits to Wegener Center will be integral part of the
project. Close collaboration with impact modellers from the
Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISI-MIP) is expected.
The PIK was founded in 1992 and is an internationally renowned research
institution in the areas of climate change, climate policy and climate
economics.
We offer one full-time position from 1 July to 31 December 2015, with
the possibility of extension up until December 2016 depending on project
approval. Salary and benefits are according to public service
regulations in Germany (E13 TV-L).
The position is linked to the ISI-MIP project (www.isi-mip.org
<http://www.isi-mip.org/>), which aims to provide a framework to collate
a consistent set of climate impact data across sectors (e.g. water,
natural vegetation, agriculture) and different scales.
We seek a highly motivated student or young post-doctoral researcher to
develop statistical post-processing methods for bias correcting global
climate model output. The post-processed simulations will serve as
standardized input for ISI-MIP and the tools will also be offered to
process the new CMIP6 climate model simulations for impact modelers. The
main task of the position is to develop a plausible and physically
defensible bias correction method. This means, the method should
encompass both the actual statistical development as well as
understanding the applicability and limitations of the approach and the
interpretation of the results in the context of climate impact
modelling. Special attention should be paid to the treatment of extreme
weather and climate events.
The successful candidate will:
Have an MSc-degree in meteorology, climatology, physics, applied
statistics or a related quantitative science;
Have a strong interest in developing statistical methods, but also
in understanding the feasibility of these methods in the context of
climate change and global climate model errors;
Have proven expertise in modern applied statistics (highly desirable);
Enjoy working in a team in an international research environment and
to be keen to develop their climatological and statistical knowledge
as well as practical skills.
The position remains open until filled, but applications are encouraged
by 3 June, 2015. Please send your application including a letter of
motivation, CV, two references and, if available, two short samples of
scientific text in English (e.g., introduction/conclusion from a thesis)
as a single pdf to Katja Frieler (isi-mip@pik-potsdam.de) and Douglas
Maraun (dmaraun@geomar.de <mailto:dmaraun@geomar.de>) with the keywords
'[ISI-MIP Bias Correction Position]' in the subject line.
PIK seeks to increase the number of female scientists and encourages
them to apply. Disabled persons with equal qualifications will be
favorably regarded.

An immediate opening exists for a post-doc to help
with California drought activities, at Scripps Institution
of Oceanography in La Jolla. Sent by Kelly Redmond
at Western Regional Climate Center, Reno Nevada, on behalf
of and as part of the California-Nevada Applications Program,
a NOAA RISA project, who will participate in oversight of this
position along with Scripps.
Post-doctoral fellow opportunity on California and Sierra Nevada drought.
Host: Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA.
Deadline: Available immediately, applications will be received until filled.
California, the Sierra Nevada, and western Nevada are experiencing a
fourth year of drought, in many respects the worst or among the worst
droughts in this region?s recorded history. This event has motivated
efforts to better understand the physical causes and social and
environmental impacts of drought in the varied geographic and
climatological settings within this area, and to improve adaptation and
mitigation outcomes in different economic sectors. The successful
candidate will work closely to learn from decision makers in the region,
informed by past findings and by ongoing and planned stakeholder
interactions. Active involvement is expected in all these time frames.
The position is supported by the National Integrated Drought Information
System (NIDIS) and will be managed by the California-Nevada Applications
Program (CNAP), one of a dozen teams nationwide funded by NOAA under the
Regional Integrated Sciences and Applications (RISA) Program. CNAP has
core centers at Scripps and at the Desert Research Institute (DRI) in Reno.
In conjunction with the CNAP team, the post-doc will help coordinate the
maintenance and potential expansion of user engagement activities. These
include translation and interpretation of the current state of climate
science pertinent to this area, usage of and access to observations,
status of monitoring, knowledge of regional climate and its variability,
and any other information about climate, to assist in management and
planning. The post-doc will organize stakeholder meetings, webinars and
other outreach efforts to extend attention to those less well served by
present programs and institutions, such as small water systems with
limited resources. The candidate is expected to be familiar with the
many different types of impacts of drought found throughout the affected
area, and the cultural and social context that influences preparation
and response to drought. The candidate must have a familiarity with
climate variability, the physical and social landscape of California and
the surrounding region as well as national trends in environmental
science and policy. Strong organizational and communications skills are
required, as well as the ability to interact comfortably with a very
wide range of audiences to generate sustained dialog. The applicant must
be willing and able to travel throughout California and Nevada to engage
stakeholders.
Candidates must have a completed doctoral degree, in the field of
climate or related physical science, or in the social sciences with a
very strong emphasis on climate. Further information can be obtained
from Drs. Julie Kalansky ( <jkalansky@ucsd.edu> , 858-534-3327), Dr. Dan

<kelly.redmond@dri.edu> , 775-674- 7011). Applications must include a
cover letter and statement of drought or climate related experience and
background, c.v., and references. Please direct these to Dr. Kalansky
via email or surface mail at address Scripps Institution of
Oceanography, UCSD, 9500 Gilman Drive, Department 0224, La Jolla, CA
92093-0224. The position includes standard UCSD post-doc benefits.

Title: Funded MPhil Studentship
School/Department: Physics and Astronomy
Supervisors: Prof. John Remedios and Dr. Darren Ghent
Start Date: Between 1st July and 3rd October 2015
Entry Requirement: BSc Hons in Geology, Geochemistry, Remote Sensing or similar.
Closing Date: 30th June 2015
Research Studentship (MPhil) in Identification and Mapping of Geothermal Anomalies using Satellite Data.
Applications are invited for a 12 month research studentship in Identification and Mapping of Geothermal Anomalism using NASA MODIS and other satellite instruments. The project is funded by a company and the National Centre for Earth Observation based at the University.
The MPhil studentship will cover a maintenance grant for 12 months and a small amount for research expenses and travel. Full University student fees for students will be covered. Support on technical aspects of the studentship will also be offered by the National Centre for Earth Observation.
Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Prof. John Remedios or Dr Darren Ghent for an informal discussion on 0116 223 1319 or by email to jjr8@leicester.ac.uk<mailto:jjr8@leicester.ac.uk> or djg20@leicester.ac.uk<mailto:djg20@leicester.ac.uk>.
The student will be based in the department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Leicester http://www2.le.ac.uk/departments/physics ). The student will be encouraged to complete all aspects of the MPhil including submission by the end of the 12 month grant period.
Project Overview
The project will use MODIS data to develop novel analyses of Land Surface Temperature (LST) and an understanding of the necessary corrections to be made in order that geothermal anomalism can be correctly identified. The project will cover the following areas:
? How to define anomalous thermal signatures in a spatial context and whether these anomalies are temporally consistent. There is always a possibility for identifying false anomalies. How can this be reduced?
? The likelihood for anomalies to show a significant difference in mean LST from normal statistical variance. What statistical confidence can be placed in identification of anomalous regions?
? Methods for enhancing thermal dataset images so that LST diurnal patterns and variations from solar radiation effects are minimised. By reducing these components, will the data provide information on surface soil or rock features?
? Investigation of potential for LST datasets to be applied in remote sensing for oil/gas and energy industries, e.g. identifying sedimentary basins and their hinterlands.
The University of Leicester has a range of expertise in the field of LST and Earth Observation and the project and the student will gain valuable experience from both working within a proactive, world class research team, and with a first class industrial sponsor.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must have a first-class or high upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent qualification in Geology, Geochemistry, Remote Sensing or a closely related subject) and complete the university online application process on http://www2.le.ac.uk/study/research/how-to-apply/online

POST-DOCTORAL POSITIONS
IN LAND SURFACE AND ECOSYSTEM MODELING
LSCE, Gif-sur-Yvette, 09/06/2015
The land-surface modeling group at the LSCE (?Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de
l?Environnement?, www.lsce.ipsl.fr/) is looking for several post-doctoral researchers interested
in land surface modeling and ecosystem functioning. The positions are available for a fixed-term
period of 24 months with a possible one or two year extension.
The scientific context for these positions includes the quantification of carbon and water fluxes
in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum, the understanding of the underlying processes to
support greenhouse gas (GHG) emission mitigation in the context of global changes (climate,
land-use and land-management changes), the impact of nitrogen cycle on ecosystem carbon
fluxes, and the investigation of carbon- and water-related ecosystem services (i.e., wood
production, carbon sequestration, water availability). The main scientific objectives and the
related tasks of the position will be determined following discussions between the applicant and
the principal investigators, while taking into account the experience and career path of the
applicant. The European projects that will fund these positions will provide additional context
and may guide some of the objectives of the work. For instance, two projects with the
University of Lund aim to i) better understand how interactions between forest management
and nitrogen inputs (fertilization, deposition) impact the carbon storage of European forests and
ii) use data assimilation techniques to improve model skill with multiple data streams (in
particular from the ICOS European infrastructure). Another project with ECMWF meteorological
centre will focus on the reanalysis of the carbon cycle over the last century.
The post-doctoral researcher will primarily use the global land surface model ORCHIDEE,
including recent developments related to the nitrogen cycle, forest management, and crop and
pasture management. Atmospheric transport models may also be used to assimilate atmospheric
GHG concentrations as large-scale constraints using advanced data assimilation techniques. The
activities will be mainly located at LSCE (CEA, Orme des Merisiers, Gif/Yvette, France) on the
plateau of Saclay, approximately 25 km south-west of Paris, with some travel to Sweden.
Home institution:
Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l?Environnement (LSCE, Orme-les-Merisiers, Gif-surYvette).
LSCE is a joint research unit of Commissariat ? L?Energie Atomique et des Energies
Alternatives (CEA), Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and Universit? de
Versailles Saint Quentin-en-Yvelines (UVSQ). LSCE employs over 320 researchers covering 30
different nationalities. Their research mission is to contribute to a better understanding of the
interactions between human activities in the Earth System, environment and climate dynamics
at different time scales. LSCE is a world-class institute and a thriving nexus for climate change
research.
Qualifications required:
Given the interdisciplinary nature of the research we are seeking highly motivated individuals
with a degree (Master or PhD) in for example mathematics, physics, engineering, computer
science, meteorology or theoretical ecology. A broad interest in natural sciences and more
specifically in terrestrial ecology is essential. Rather than requiring any particular training, we
are looking for candidates motivated by science with ability to develop code (particularly
Fortran 90) and to integrate scientific knowledge into numerical schemes. Priority will be given
to individuals who have published peer-reviewed papers but it is not a strict requirement.
Required content of the application:
There are no specific application forms. Applications and inquiries should be sent to:
Bertrand Guenet (bertrand.guenet__at__lsce.ipsl.fr)
Sebastiaan Luyssaert (Sebastiaan.Luyssaert__at__lsce.ipsl.fr)
Nicolas Viovy (Nicolas.Viovy__at__lsce.ipsl.fr)
Nicolas Vuichard (Nicolas.Vuichard__at__lsce.ipsl.fr)
Philippe Peylin (philippe.peylin__at__lsce.ipsl.fr)
Gregoire Broquet (gregoire.broquet__at__lsce.ipsl.fr)
Applications should include (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) statement of motivation including a short
description (about a half page and no more than 1 page) of a recent scientific question you answered and (3)
names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of at least two references. The position
is available from September 1st and will remain open until filled with a review of applications
and interviews starting on 24th June. Salary follows national directives and is adjusted for work
experience. A dual position may be explored in case your partner/spouse has a competitive CV
and background in line with the research activities at LSCE.
