PhD Studentship at Department of Physics, Imperial College
UK or EU students only
Applications are invited for a PhD position within the Space and Atmospheric Physics Group, to start in October 2014. The successful applicant will work with Professor Ralf Toumi and will contribute to the development of a regional climate model. You will join an active and growing research group within the Space and Atmospheric Physics Group. We are developing a new regional climate model based on the coupling of the atmospheric model (WRF) and the regional ocean model system (ROMS) and a new spatial-temporal statistical model. We are interested in a number of understudied regions around the world (e.g. the Caspian, West Africa and many others) with a unique and exciting set of environmental science challenges.
In this project we are collaborating with the Climate KIC (www.climate-kic.org<http://www.climate-kic.org/>) and the OASIS project (www.oasislmf.org<http://www.oasislmf.org/>) to develop new physical-statistical model that can simulate extreme events. The successful candidate will have (or have submitted) a good first degree or Masters in a relevant subject such as physical science/ mathematics. The award is only open to UK or EU students. You must have an enthusiastic approach to research with strong written communication skills and the ability to write scientifically, clearly and succinctly for publication.
Send CV to Prof Ralf Toumi; r.toumi@imperial.ac.uk<mailto:r.toumi@imperial.ac.uk>
Deadline: 5th May 2014
Best wishes,
Ralf

We are interested in a number of understudied regions around the world (e.g. the Caspian, West Africa and many others) with a unique and exciting set of environmental science challenges.
In this project you will explore the technique of seismic oceanography (e.g. http://www.utm.csic.es/so/seismic_oceanography). this exciting technique offers new and unique insight into the structure of the ocean. You will analyse new data and explore how these can be used to improve the ocean model. You should have a good first degree (Upper Second/First Class) in a Physical Science/ Mathematics and/or relevant Masters. The award is only open to UK or EU students. You must have an enthusiastic approach to research with strong written communication skills and the ability to write scientifically, clearly and succinctly for publication.
