Two Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

CLIMATE MODELLING AND ANALYSIS OVER CENTRAL & SOUTHERN AFRICA

Applications are invited for two post?doctoral research fellowships on climate modelling and analysis over central & southern Africa (CSA) as part of the UK DFID funded project UMFULA (Uncertainty reduction in Models for development Applications), beginning July 2015. The positions will be based in the Department of Oceanography at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

We seek energetic and motivated young scientists to join an international team of researchers working on climate science and applications over Africa. One appointee will focus on the multi-scale analysis of global and regional climate model performance over CSA relative to observations, and the other fellow will focus on regional ocean-atmosphere coupling over the neighbouring oceanic regions such as the Seychelles-Chagos thermocline ridge, the Angola-Benguela frontal zone and the Agulhas retroflection that are known to be important for climate variability and change over CSA.

The tenure of the fellowship is for up to four years, subject to satisfactory progress each year. The value of the fellowship is about R300,000 per annum (the exact amount depends on the GBP exchange rate). The fellowship does not include benefits or travel/relocation costs but there are some funds for conference expenses.

Eligibility
1. Applicants must have completed their PhD within the last 5 years in Atmospheric Science, Physical Oceanography or Climate Science or a related field
2. Demonstrated experience in regional or global climate modelling
3. Excellent computing and analytical skills

Applications
Applications should be sent to chris.reason@uct.ac.za and should include:
1. A comprehensive CV, including names and contact details of three referees;
2. A letter of motivation outlining research interests; and

Further information can be obtained from chris.reason@uct.ac.za . Please see www.sea.uct.ac.za for further information about the Department of oceanography, UCT

Closing date for applications: 15 July 2015
