SUBJECT: PhD position in Hydrometeorology at Universit? Laval (Qu?bec, CA) starting early 2016.
PROJECT: The first phase of the project involves student familiarization with the well-known Canadian Land Surface Scheme (CLASS) as well as with the recently formulated model of evapotranspiration (ET) and heat fluxes based on theory of Maximum Entropy Production (MEP). The MEP method differs conceptually from physically based approached used in CLASS. While CLASS deal with fundamental lows governing the physical world, the MEP theory address the question ?what is the best prediction based on the available information??. Student will perform offline simulations with CLASS and MEP, and compare simulated land surface fluxes with available observations.
The second phase will focus on implementation of the MEP model into the CLASS. The MEP model can be programed in such a way that the structures of the bulk transfer Land Surface Models (such as CLASS) are unaffected to assure smooth expansion of the LSM to include the MEP model as an option of parameterization of surface energy budget.
This project is in close collaboration with Prof. Jingfeng Wang from Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, USA) and several researchers from Ouranos Consortium on Regional Climatology and Adaptation to Climate Change (Montreal, CA).
To apply please send an email to Prof. Daniel Nadeau (Daniel.nadeau@gci.ulaval.ca<mailto:Daniel.nadeau@gci.ulaval.ca>), Prof. Fran?ois Anctil (Francois.Anctil@gci.ulaval.ca<mailto:Francois.Anctil@gci.ulaval.ca>) and to Dr. Biljana Music (music.biljana@ouranos.ca<mailto:music.biljana@ouranos.ca>) with your CV, a short motivation letter, examples of previous research (M.Sc. thesis or published papers), as well as the names of two referees.
INSTITUTION: Universit? Laval (UL) is the oldest French-language university in North America. UL is a comprehensive university boasting some 48,000 students?a quarter of them graduates?as well as 17 faculties, 60 departments and schools, and nearly 400 undergraduate and graduate programs in every field of knowledge. The Department of Civil and Water Engineering employs 25 professors, in various fields such as environmental fluid mechanics, hydrology and applied hydraulics. Although graduate studies at Universit? Laval can be carried out in English, the candidate will be strongly encouraged to learn French. Last but not least, Quebec City is a vibrant city, famous for its festivals, numerous green parks and cold (but enjoyable) winters. The prospective student should have a good background and interest in programming, atmospheric sciences and/or hydrology, and should be willing to start his PhD in Winter 2016.
Salary: 21 000 CAD
