A major strategic aim of Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science (ICAS) in the School of Earth and Environment (SEE) is to scale up the process-based research on modelling and observations to tackle large scale climate and weather problems of societal relevance. Exploiting Earth Observation (EO) datasets of atmospheric and other climate phenomena is the most effective way of achieving this aim. ICAS is a leading international institute for the study of atmospheric and climate processes using models, field observations and laboratory experiments. We are now looking to add new capability in Earth observation.

The aim of this fellowship is to create new expertise and research capacity in satellite remote sensing of climate phenomena in order to: create a strong synergy with ICAS's existing expertise on modelling and observations that enables this research to be scaled up to address higher impact issues; position ICAS at the frontier of emerging fields concerning the interactions of the atmosphere with the biosphere, ocean and cryosphere; position ICAS to be able to make early use of recently launched satellite instruments that will allow new breakthroughs in understanding changes in the Earth system.

You will develop a research profile that will contribute to the University's ambition to be recognised among the top few international centres for climate science. You will develop a sustained record of internationally excellent, and some world-leading, publications and a strong record of presentations at international conferences. You will work closely with and integrate ICAS's broad modelling and observational research to create the potential for substantial innovation, such as, interdisciplinary crossovers leading to innovative new science in previously unexplored areas; observational constraint of our advanced weather and climate models, leading to improved predictions of regional climate impacts; and development of cutting-edge teaching materials, enabling ICAS to engage students in the "Golden Age of Earth Observation". You will also be expected to develop an innovative contribution to the teaching portfolio at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

With a PhD in climate-related science or Earth observation, you will have expertise and a strong research record in Earth observation, the ability to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as a clear and compelling vision for personal academic development.

Enquiries can be made to Professor Ken Carslaw, Director of ICAS, email: k.s.carslaw@leeds.ac.uk<mailto:k.s.carslaw@leeds.ac.uk>, tel: +44 (0)113 343 1597.

The topic of climate impacts is a major and growing discipline that applies our emerging understanding of changes in weather and climate to understand and predict future effects on society. Leeds aims to become a distinctive and influential player in climate impact assessment by creating an innovative integrated research programme that links expertise on the land surface and impacts on global agricultural systems. There is significant potential for innovation by cross-fertilisation of approaches and methods from climate impacts research and land-surface modelling, which are traditionally distinct disciplines.

This fellowship will create new expertise and research capacity in the area of climate impacts on the global land surface, crops, food security and carbon balance. It provides an opportunity to build on the unique mix of existing strengths in the Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science and across the University in climate impacts, land surface observations and modelling, land-use change, biosphere-atmosphere interactions and the carbon cycle. The ambition and growing strength in this area is reflected in the new Leeds Ecosystem Atmosphere and Forests (LEAF) research centre (www.leaf.leeds.ac.uk<http://www.leaf.leeds.ac.uk/>). This fellowship is the next phase in the development of this interdisciplinary research area. The fellow will also be expected to develop an innovative contribution to the teaching portfolio at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

With a PhD in climate-related science you will have expertise and a strong research record in Climate Impacts and the ability to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as a clear and compelling vision for personal academic development.

Post-doctoral fellowship at CNRM
(CNRM-GAME, UMR 3589 - METEO-FRANCE, CNRS)

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research fellowship starting end 2015 or beginning 2016, at
M?t?o-France, in the Mesoscale Modelling Group of Centre National de Recherches M?t?orologiques
(CNRM-GAME) in Toulouse, France (http://www.cnrm.meteo.fr/) to work on the following subject:

Implementation of a global land data assimilation system (LDAS-Monde)
(renewable 12-month contract)

Funding source: the European eartH2Observe FP7 project.

CNRM is developing SURFEX, an operational modeling platform able to simulate the terrestrial water and carbon
fluxes. SURFEX simulates the vegetation growth and has a simplified representation of agricultural practices. SURFEX can be coupled to a number of hydrological models.
SURFEX includes a land data assimilation system (LDAS) based on Extended and Ensemble Kalman filters, able to analyze soil moisture and vegetation biomass at spatial resolutions ranging from 1 to 50 km.
The LDAS is operational over France and Earth observation data (ASCAT soil moisture, SPOT/VGT LAI) are integrated
into the ISBA-A-gs land surface model.
The post-doctorate fellow will contribute to the (1) extension of the LDAS at a global
scale with a special attention to the Euro-Mediterranean area, (2) addition of new
variables (FAPAR, surface albedo, soil moisture at several depths) in the analysis,
(3) production of a land reanalysis based on the assimilation of historical satellite
observations and of new satellite data (SMOS, SMAP, PROBA-V, S3).
The impact of the assimilation of land variables on the river discharge will be assessed. The
reanalysis of land essential climate variables (ECVs) will be assessed.

The net yearly salary will vary from about 55000 ? to 65000 ? depending on qualification, plus full health care and
retirement pension benefits.

The candidates should have knowledge on land surface modelling and/or data assimilation, and/or remote sensing of
continental surfaces. They should be familiar with programming languages, the Linux environment, with data analysis and graphic softwares (e.g. Python, R, IDL, ...).

Application should be done by email by sending a resume, a motivation letter, and
the names, telephone and email address of 2 referees to:

jean-christophe.calvet@meteo.fr

The closing date for applications is 20 September 2015.
