FACULTY POSITION AT SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY, UCSD

Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California San Diego
(http://scripps.ucsd.edu) invites faculty applications for the position listed below. We seek a
motivated, broad-thinking scientist-educator to establish a vigorous research program and
provide intellectual leadership in their field while complementing existing expertise at Scripps,
other UCSD departments, and nearby institutions. SIO is a world renowned center of marine
research with approximately 200 principal investigators leading research programs on all aspects
of earth, ocean, biological and atmospheric sciences. We are committed to academic excellence
and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The department is interested in
candidates who have demonstrated commitment to excellence by providing leadership in
teaching, research or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.

Polar Science: We seek outstanding candidates in Polar Science. Relevant research areas
could include glaciology, oceanography, climate, biogeochemistry, and microbiology. We are
particularly interested in individuals able to establish connections between more than one
element of the polar system. Possible foci include land ice, sea ice, biogeochemistry, the carbon
cycle, microbial processes, paleoclimate, subglacial processes (including biology), and highlatitude
climate processes. Research approaches can include observations (field and remote
sensing), modeling, genomics, and dynamics. SIO also has faculty openings in Observational
Physical Oceanography, Earth and Planetary Sciences and Marine Physiology/Cell Biology at:
https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/apply.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach classes, supervise research at both the
graduate and undergraduate level and contribute to leadership on issues of equity and diversity.
The position requires a PhD degree in a relevant field and a competitive record of publication, as
well as evidence of the ability to conduct and fund an active research program consistent with the
opportunity to have done so at this career level. The successful candidate will also demonstrate
the highest standards of scholarship and professional activity, or for junior scholars to have the
potential thereof. Our strong preference is for hiring at the level of Assistant Professor, but
appointments at all ranks (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, including Acting titles) may also
be considered. Salary will depend on the experience of the successful applicant and will be
based on the UCSD pay scales.
To apply by September 15, 2015 deadline, go to:
Assistant Professor at: https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/apply/JPF00844
Associate/Full
Professor at: https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/apply/JPF00853

Current Assistant level candidates with a strong record of research and teaching are encouraged
to submit materials through both links.

Extended deadline for the training school Convective and Volcanic clouds detection, monitoring and modeling.
September 15, 2015We will close the registration once (and in case) we fill all the available seats.

Below the details, attached the flyer.

First training school on
"Convective and volcanic clouds detection, monitoring and modeling"
Castiglione del Lago, Italy, 4-9 October 2015

This training school is supported by the European Geosciences Union (EGU), organized by the Wegener Center for Climate anf Global Change (WegC) in collaboration with the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) and local organization provided by island of meetings (iom).

Attending the school you will get an overview of the state of the art techniques and methods for detecting and monitoring the volcanic and convective clouds, you will know the different instruments and platforms allowing us to get the best performance in detecting such kind of clouds, you will be projected to the future learning about new missions planned for solving the main issues on these fields, you will be involved in real applications as early warming systems and modeling, you will directly analize the data.
The school topics will range from satellite instruments such as IR sensors or GPS radio occultations to aircraft measuremtents like lidar and radar, from study of ash and SO2 clouds to tropical cyclones, Mediterranean hurricanes, land and maritime convection.
The purpose of the School is to train students with outstanding research interest in the techniques allowing to detect, monitor, and model convective and volcanic clouds, to gain knowledge of the instruments and satellite missions (present and future) and to be able to support such kind of studies.
The extreme atmospheric event cloud detection is a high multidisciplinary and challenging topic since the same techniques and instruments can be used for meteorology, volcanic monitoring, atmospheric physics and climate purposes. Within all these fields there are still many unsolved issues making this school fundamental for creating a new generation of scientists able to use the synergy of several different instruments and techniques.
Each topic includes keynote plenary lectures with in-depth discussion. The school will consist of lectures combined with the practical application of the material covered in the lectures through introductory lab sessions and a set of research problems that will form the core of the School.
Through the introductory keynotes invited lectures, the students will be introduced to all the issues and challenges of the convective and volcanic cloud detection, monitoring and modeling, gaining an overview of the state of the art and the future development.
All the participants are expected to give a short talk or to present a poster about their own research; the selection of the talks will be done through evaluation process as in a regular conference.
The students will leave the school with an increased understanding of the cutting-edge research questions and with the perspective of creating some future projects in this field also thanks to the network created during the school with the lecturers and other students.
IDL and ENVI linceses will be offered to all the participants for the period of the course.
15 EGU Grants covering the registration fee, will be awarded to participants coming from developing countries.

Applications
The School is open to graduate students, PhD students and early career researchers.
