At the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute we have a new PhD position on the modeling of precipitation extremes in a climatic context.

Details are at:
https://www.werkenvoornederland.nl/vacatures/detail/phd-position-on-spatial-and-temporal-dependencies-of-precipitation-extremes

to apply: following link "Direct solliciteren" and then "Apply with English form" (in yellow bar on top).

Please note that this is a 4-year position, with an evaluation after 1 year.

The candidate will work on the analysis of temporal and spatial dependencies of daily and sub-daily precipitation extremes derived from observations and very high resolution atmospheric models in the context of a changing climate. These extremes are caused by intense thunderstorms in summer, which can only recently be represented by weather models. Model results and observations are used to understand and underpin past and future changes of these small-scale precipitation extremes. These extremes have increased up to now and are expected to increase substantially due to climate change, but the changes are also very uncertain due to limitations in present-day climate models. Therefore we apply in this project a new generation of atmospheric models, at scales below 2.5 km, that specifically resolve the shower dynamics that give rise to precipitation extremes. The research will be done in collaboration with a number of users concerning urban flood management, road design and water management in Dutch waterboards.

We are looking for a candidate with a finished master degree in physics or applied mathematics, or equivalent study. The candidate should have experience with coding in Fortran, Pascal, C or an equivalent language. Experience with analysis tools like, R, IDL, ncl, Matlab, Python is required, and experience with Unix/Linux environment and analysis of large data sets is desirable. The candidate should have a good understanding of physical processes, preferably in a scientific area related to weather and/or climate.
This work will be done in the program ?Space2rain?as part of the national science foundation NWO program ?The new delta?. The candidate is expected to publish his/her results in peer reviewed journals, which form the basis of a Ph.D. thesis to be defended at the TUD in Delft (promotor Prof. P. Siebesma, co promotor Dr. G. Lenderink).
