2 PhD and 2 Postdoc positions in Machine Learning for Geosciences
-----------------------------------------------------------------

We are searching for outstanding candidates with a strong interest in machine learning and geosciences to
cover 2 PhD and 2 postdoctoral positions to join the Image and Signal Processing (ISP) group in the
Universitat de Valencia, Spain, http://isp.uv.es. The positions are funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant
2015-2020 entitled "Statistical Learning for Earth Observation Data Analysis" (SEDAL) under the direction of
Prof. Gustau Camps-Valls. More info about the openings in http://isp.uv.es/sedal.pdf

*** The project and job description

We aim to develop the next generation of statistical inference methods to analyze Earth Observation (EO) data.
Machine learning models have helped to monitor land, oceans, and atmosphere through the analysis and
estimation of climate and biophysical parameters. Current approaches, however, cannot deal efficiently with
the particular characteristics of remote sensing data. We will develop advanced regression (retrieval, model
inversion) methods to improve efficiency, prediction accuracy and uncertainties, encode physical knowledge
about the problem, attain self-explanatory models, learn graphical causal models to explain the complex
interactions between essential climate variables and observations, and discover hidden essential drivers and
confounding factors in Climate/Geo Sciences.

Highly motivated researchers with a degree/PhD in computer science, statistics, machine learning, electrical
engineering, physics, or mathematics are encouraged to apply. All candidates should have a solid understanding
and knowledge of machine learning and statistics, and being particularly interested in remote sensing and
geoscience problems. Positions will cover two different profiles: (1) Expertise in remote sensing and
geosciences: model inversion, radiative transfer models, biogeochemistry, climate science, detection and
attribution, global carbon/heat/water fluxes, in-situ datasets for land/vegetation/atmosphere monitoring; and
(2) Expertise in machine learning, statistics and signal processing: regression and time series analysis,
change and anomaly detection, structured/relational/transfer learning, graphical models and causal inference.
In both cases, good programming skills (Matlab/Python/R/C++), a critical and organized sense for data
analysis, as well as maturity and commitment, strong communication, presentation and writing skills are a big
plus.

Postdoctoral Position at JPL/Caltech in Subseasonal Prediction and ?Atmospheric River? Research

Improving long-term forecasting to support drought prediction/response and to improve planning for flood risk management is a high priority for a number of regions around the world. Recent scientific advancements on subseasonal to seasonal (S2S) predictions, as well as multi-scale interactions that include tropical (e.g. MJO, ENSO) and mid-latitude variability (e.g. PNA, AO), and so-called ?atmospheric rivers? (ARs) offer new opportunities for making advances on flood, drought, and water supply management in the western U.S. The California Institute of Technology?s (Caltech?s) Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) invites applicants for a postdoctoral research position to carry out model evaluation, prediction and predictability studies on multi-scale interactions relevant to atmospheric rivers impacts on S2S time scales. Key modeling assets to be used in this research includes a recent multi-model physical processes experiment (www.earthsystemcog.org/projects/gass-yotc-mip/<http://www.earthsystemcog.org/projects/gass-yotc-mip/>) and a new S2S hindcast archive (s2sprediciton.net<http://s2sprediciton.net>).

Applicants must have a recent Ph.D. in atmospheric science or a closely related field, must be familiar with atmospheric and/or hydrological prediction, and have a strong background in model and observation analyses. Experience with observation-based model evaluation and prediction/predictability analysis is desired.

Postdoctoral scholar positions are contingent upon evidence of completion of the Ph.D. The positions are awarded initially for a one-year period and may be renewed in one-year increments for a maximum of two additional years.

To apply, please send a letter describing your research interests and enclose your CV and the names of three references, by mail to Duane Waliser, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, MS 183-501, 4800 Oak Grove Drive, Pasadena, CA 91109-8099, or by email to duane.waliser@jpl.nasa.gov<mailto:duane.waliser@jpl.nasa.gov>.

Caltech and JPL are equal opportunity/affirmative action employers. Women, minorities, veterans, and disabled persons are encouraged to apply. This position is open to US or foreign nationals.
