Rank: Assistant Professor or Associate Professor
Description:
The Department of Geography at The Ohio State University Columbus, Ohio is seeking applications for an anticipated tenure-track position in meteorology/climatology at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, beginning autumn 2016. We seek a scholar with the demonstrated ability to sustain a strong, externally funded research program, advise students and teach courses in synoptic meteorology, weather forecasting, and related themes in support of our atmospheric sciences program (BS-MS-PhD). This position is partially/m/ funded by Ohio State's Discovery Themes Initiative, a significant faculty hiring investment in key thematic areas in which the university can build on its culture of academic collaboration to make a global impact http://discovery.osu.edu/focus-areas/data-analytics/.
This position requires a collaborative researcher capable of developing a research program based on the innovative use of the ever-expanding observational and model-derived weather and climate data sets. There is a strong expectation that the scholar will engage in quantitative research and collaborate broadly across disciplines, departments and colleges. Successful applicants must provide evidence - or potential, in case of junior scholars - of a competitive record of publication and the ability to conduct and fund an active research program involving one or more of the following: weather forecasting, extreme weather and climate, climate system modeling, model output downscaling, multiplatform satellite observation synthesis, and data mining of climate and/or weather information. Other desirable research and teaching specialties might include ecological modeling; climate change adaptation or response; modeling nutrient and/or biogeochemical cycles; and remote sensing of land surfaces at regional to global scales.
Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, physical geography or a closely related field is required. Appointment is contingent on the university?s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.

Freie Universit?t Berlin
Institute of Meteorology
Prof. Dr. Henning Rust

*PhD position: Stochastic parametrizations of convective processes (3
years)*

Freie Universit?t Berlin is one of only a few German Universities
which have been awarded and maintained the status of excellence.
The Institute of Meteorology of Freie Universit?t Berlin plays a
leading role in climate and weather research, with ample experience in
e.g., climate modeling and evaluation, dynamical and
statistical downscaling and forecast verification.

The Institute for Meteorology invites applications for a scientist
(E13 TV-L FU, 50%, temporary for 3 years, PhD student) to work on
stochastic parametrizations of convective processes in climate
models. The post starts November 1st, 2015 and is associated with the
newly established working group Statistical Meteorology. The
successful candidate will be studying parametrizations capturing
unresolved convective processes. Classical parametrizations will be
compared to those involving stochastic processes. Studies range from
toy model setups for the investigation of quite general features to
global and regional climate models. Of particular interest are effects
on different spatio-temporal scales and on ensemble spread. The
candidate is expected to participate in teaching within the institutes
Bachelor and Master program.

The successful candidate holds a university degree (Master, Diploma)
in Meteorology, Physics, Applied Mathematics or a related field.

Beneficial are experience with the theory of turbulence, climate
modeling, stochastic models, stochastic/conventional
parametrizations, as well as UNIX/Linux based computer environments,
modern environments of statistical computing (preferably R),
publication and presentation of scientific results.

Applications including a letter of motivation, a CV and copies of
relevant university certificates should be sent before October 19th,
2015 either by mail to
