Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Climate and Ocean Physics
University of Oxford
Department of Physics (Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics)
Grade 7: ?30,434 ? ?37,394 pa
Fixed term: 17 months
Closing date: 9 November 2015
Application and Further Details: www.recruit.ox.ac.uk<http://www.recruit.ox.ac.uk>
Vacancy Ref.: 119831
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work in the Climate and Ocean Physics group at the University of Oxford, Department of Physics. The position is available immediately for a fixed-term of 17 months.
The successful applicant will develop novel and creative approaches (e.g. based on stochastic physics, non-viscous fluids ?) to represent eddy-mean flow interactions in the next generation of ocean climate models. The aim of the work is to provide new insights on the role of mesoscale eddies in setting the large-scale ocean flows (e.g. Gulf Stream, Antarctic Circumpolar Current) and their impact on climate variability and predictability. The aims will be achieved by using some combination of theoretical, observational and numerical analysis. The candidate will work on a key problem in climate science, namely the effect of sub-grid scale processes onto the large-scale flow (e.g. energy backscatter, low-frequency variability, atmospheric regimes) and also inform new parametrisations of ocean mesoscale eddies to improve our climate forecasting capability.
Applicants should have, or be very close to obtaining, a doctorate in physical, mathematical, computational or engineering science. Ideally, the candidate will have a strong background in applied physics and fluid dynamics, experience in numerical modelling and proven track record of original research. Previous experience in climate dynamics and modelling will be an advantage.
Please direct informal enquiries about the role to Laure Zanna (laure.zanna@physics.ox.ac.uk<mailto:laure.zanna@physics.ox.ac.uk>). You will be required to upload a CV with a publication list, a brief statement of research interest, a supporting statement, and the details of two referees as part of your online application. Only applications received before 12.00 midday on Monday 9 November 2015 can be considered.
