Model Evaluation Diagnostic Software Engineer
Full time, permanent contract
Based in Exeter
Job Responsibilities
* Act as code owner for a number of offline and on-line diagnostic software codes (e.g. operational monitoring, 'auto-assess'), and contribute to the development of others (e.g. Trials User Interface (TRUI), model nudging, cyclone tracking, etc.).
* Develop or re-write these codes as appropriate to improve their functionality, efficiency and ease of use.
* Work with others to unify related codes as appropriate and help set the strategy for their future development (e.g. consider interactions between operational monitoring, verification libraries, TRUI, 'auto-assess', 'climate cloud').
* Develop evaluation and monitoring codes to interact efficiently with other Met Office systems (MASS storage system; supercomputer).
* Develop and manage the release of some of the offline codes to UM partner institutes (e.g. UK universities, partnering national meteorological services in other countries) with the intention that their further development should be undertaken by the wider UM community.
* Develop all codes using recognised software quality assurance processes and act as a point of expertise on quality assurance for scientists writing their own codes.
Essential
* Bachelor's degree or equivalent, at level 2.2 or above, in a physical science, mathematics or computing subject or equivalent experience.
* Be an expert numerical programmer in Python or a similar language, having built and maintained complex applications using this language and its scientific extensions.
* Have experience of software engineering disciplines that lead to high quality tools, for instance automated testing and configuration management.
* Experience exploiting Linux/Unix as a programming environment.
* Have clear evidence of your ability to build relationships with scientists or customers and to understand their requirements.
Desirable
* Experience in developing weather and/or climate applications using Python and its scientific extensions (e.g. the IRIS library).
* Scientific background in meteorology/climatology or experience of working closely with scientists in this field.
* Experience of working with, or writing code to analyse data from, the Met Office Unified Model.
