Job Description ? Events Organiser
Part Time Role: 20 hours per week
Salary: ?15,000 per annum

Background
The Royal Meteorological Society is the UK?s professional and learned Society for Weather and Climate, and is respected around the world for its contribution to meteorology. The Society is a charity and its programmes of work include providing professional accreditation, developing educational resources and skills, producing scientific publications, holding public and professional meetings and events, giving advice to Government and policy makers, and a growing role in providing information to the public on the science of weather and climate change.
The Events Organiser is an important role in the work of the Society. It brings together all tasks required for arranging and delivering the Society's Conference Programme. The post holder works closely with the Events and Outreach Officer, the Public Engagement Programme Manager, the Business Development and Fundraising Manager and other members of the HQ team as required.
Main Responsibilities
Administering Society Conferences
The Events Organiser is responsible for the financial and managerial administration of the Society?s conferences including preparing and reviewing budgets, managing a conference timeline, booking venues, preparing programmes, delegate registration and payments, organising catering and accommodation, helping with the conference registration and liaising with delegates, clients and suppliers, and post-event evaluation.
The role of Events Organiser is hands-on, often involves working as part of a team, acting as the central point of contact for conference related enquiries, preparing the Conference Organising Committee documents, minute taking and on-going administrative support to Committee members and to the programme, preparing programmes, biographies and abstracts and uploading them onto the Society's website.
>From time-to-time, in common with other staff in the Secretariat, you will also be expected to help on a short-term basis with any task that is necessary to ensure that the Society and its events run efficiently and achieve the objectives set by the Council. In particular when required it will be necessary to attend Society meetings, either in London or across the UK, to assist with organisational activities and to promote the work of the Society.
Required Skills and Competencies
The required skills and competencies that the Society views as important for this role are:
? event management skills and experience;
? being able to work in a team environment and used to a project-based approach to working;
? excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to prepare documentation for outside stakeholders;
? excellent organisational, influencing and negotiating skills;
? being able to build strong working partnerships with external suppliers;
? competent in working with basic IT systems and software packages;
? being able to think creatively and embrace new ideas and ways of working.
Details and Benefits
The position is based at the Society?s Headquarters in Reading, and does on occasion require travelling in the UK, particularly to London. This is a part-time post working 20 hours per week, and a 1 year fixed term contract. The Society actively supports flexible working arrangements where practical.
The post holder is entitled to 24.5 days holiday leave per year. This increases to 27.5 days after two years and then 32.5 days per year on completion of more than 12 years service. This holiday entitlement is in addition to the 8 public holidays. These entitlements are based on full-time hours and reduce pro rata for part time working. In addition to the holiday benefits the Society pays 10% of salary as its employer?s pension contribution.
Reporting
The Events Organiser will report to the Chief Executive of the Society.

Find thereafter a one-year postdoctoral fellowship:

The "Remote Sensing and Hydrodynamic" team at the Laboratoire
d'Oc?anologie et de G?osciences (http://log.cnrs.fr/) in France is
seeking applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship, beginning
January1, 2016. The candidate will work on the evaluation and comparison
of atmospheric correction algorithms over optically-complex waters for
the SeaWiFS, MODIS and MERIS sensors. This work will be done in the
frame of an IOCCG working group headed by C?dric Jamet
(http://ioccg.org/groups/atm_corr.html). The candidate will be in charge
of collecting the outputs of the different atmospheric correction
algorithms involved in the evaluation, will have to use in-situ and
simulated datasets as well as satellite images and may have to run some
algorithms. Statistical evaluation will be done. At least, the candidate
will participate to sea-field cruises for collecting in-situ datasets
(radiometric) for match-ups exercise.

A PhD. at the time of appointment is required. Candidates with knowledge
about atmospheric correction and ocean color images processing will be
preferred. The position is only for a year. The candidate should be
highly motivated and have demonstrated ability to work independently.
Programming skills in Matlab, Python and SeaDAS, and strong oral and
written communication skills are essential.

Job Purpose

Develop and improve a system for air quality data assimilation.


Job Responsibilities

To develop knowledge in air quality data assimilation, building expertise.

To maintain and improve systems for air quality data assimilation to deliver project systems and products.

To engage with the air quality & data assimilation communities in support of the project.

To contribute to the wider work of the reanalysis group.

To document and report on their work inside and outside the Met Office, meeting project and software standards.


Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

1. A degree (2:1 or above) in a physical science, mathematics or other related discipline or equivalent experience.

Scientist: Competence in postgraduate research and development in data assimilation, air quality modelling, or a related field, as demonstrated by award of a PhD, or equivalent experience.
Senior Scientist: Extensive experience and a proven track record of scientific research.

2. Application of scientific knowledge to specific problems and scenarios.

Foundation scientist: Evidence of applying technical or analytical techniques to scientific problems.
Scientist: Ability to recognise potential for scientific investigations, learn new techniques/knowledge and apply them.
Senior Scientist: Evidence of ability to find novel solutions to scientific questions. Also evidence of planning and leading a major research or software development project.

3. Use of software tools and programming languages.

Foundation Scientist: Experience of setting up and running programs to perform basic analysis.
Scientist: Ability to write effective scientific software and produce high quality data analysis.
Senior Scientist: Experience of adapting and running large complex programs or systems.

4. Communication

Foundation Scientist: Ability to effectively communicate own science both in person and in writing.
Scientist: Ability to communicate work clearly to specialists and non-specialists.
Senior Scientist: Experience of documenting and publishing work, and of presenting work to a wide community.

5. Collaborative working

Foundation Scientist: Able to work and collaborate as an active and productive member of a team.
Scientist: Able to work effectively both as an independent scientist but also as part of a larger team involving colleagues at the Met Office and international UM partners.
Senior Scientist: Evidence of ability to provide scientific/technical leadership or mentoring to junior staff.


Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

1. Knowledge of data assimilation techniques
2. Knowledge/experience of air quality modelling or observations
3. Experience of developing and running NWP systems
