A mathematical modeller is required to join a group researching and developing modelling and forecasting systems for use in the UK and overseas, particularly in support of flood warning and environmental management. These systems incorporate conceptual, time series and hydrodynamic models of water flow through catchments, lakes and river channels and can include consideration of water quality and ecosystem responses arising from extreme weather conditions.

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) conducts fundamental research focusing on climate related problems. The institute closely cooperates with the University of Hamburg, the German Climate Computing Centre and the Institute of Coastal Research of the Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht.
Within the MPI-M department ?The Land in the Earth System? we are looking for a
Scientist / Postdoc (m/f) ? MPIM-W015 ?
for an internal project on Dynamics of the Global Palaeo Monsoon System from a Terrestrial Perspective. The successful candidate will work in close cooperation with other scientists at MPI-M and geologists at the University of Hamburg towards understanding the dynamics of the monsoon system in glacial and interglacial climate. Research topics include the regional differences in the extent and duration of the African Humid Period as seen in various proxy records throughout the Northern part of Africa. Further questions address the changing teleconnection between the African and Asian monsoon systems. The main working tool will be the newly developed MPI Earth System Model 2.
Requirements:
? A PhD in in meteorology or physics with experience in Earth system modelling;
? Excellent programming skills;
? Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English is desired;
? The scientist is expected to help organizing internal and international workshops.
Employment conditions
? The position is offered for initially three years starting at January 1, 2016 or later.
? Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E14), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.
? The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientist and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.
Selection criteria
Candidates will be evaluated based on their qualifications and ability to fulfill the responsibilities as outlined for this project.

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research e.V. (TROPOS) in Leipzig (Germany) is seeking a
Postdoctoral scientist (PostDoc)
to join the research team working on the atmospheric mineral dust cycle and mechanism controlling its interannual variability. The post is located in the Modelling Department at TROPOS.
The main task of the successful candidate will be the evaluation of the MSG-SEVIRI infrared dust index over North Africa and Europe. The focus of the work is on the sensitivity of the satellite dust retrieval with regard to atmospheric dust loading, dust optical properties and atmospheric conditions and involves radiation transfer modeling using RTTOV, atmospheric dust modeling using COSMO-MUSCAT and MSG-SEVIRI satellite data. The post is an exciting opportunity for an early-career researcher to work in the thematic field at the interface between remote sensing and numerical modelling as well as soil surface and the atmosphere.
The candidate should be willing to present the results at international conferences and to publish in peer-review journals. Fluent English in written and oral form is mandatory.
The open position is limited to 2.5 years. The salary level is according to the German public service regulation (TV-L 13). The position is open until filled. The review of the applications will start on 30 November 2015. If the position is not filled, a second cut-off date may be published.
Applicants should have a PhD in atmospheric physics, meteorology, physics or related environmental science disciplines and ideally have a strong background in atmospheric radiation transport calculations and optics. Interest on the atmospheric mineral dust cycle and satellite remote sensing of mineral dust is an advantage.
We are offering the possibility to work in an interdisciplinary team at a highly renowned atmospheric research institute, and in one of the most attractive cities in Germany.
Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply. Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, preference will be given to a disabled person.
Please email your application including a letter of motivation, your CV, transcripts and contacts of 3 references to Kerstin Schepanski (schepanski(at)tropos.de) by 30 November 2015.
