RMetS Public Engagement Programme Manager

Maternity Leave Cover - 1 year

The Royal Meteorological Society is the UK's professional and learned Society for Weather and Climate, and is respected around the world for its contribution to meteorology. The Society is a charity and its programmes of work include providing professional accreditation, developing educational resources and skills, producing scientific publications, holding public and professional meetings and events, giving advice to Government and policy makers, and a growing role in providing information to the public on the science of weather and climate change.

The Public Engagement Programme Manager is an important role within the Society. It reflects the Society's desire to conduct an active programme of engagement and communication activities that deliver significant public benefit by making available high quality information on weather and climate, fostering popular interest in the weather and promoting the important role that meteorology has in people's lives. This role will work across the Society and collaborate strongly with the Head of Education, the Events and Outreach Officer, IT and Technical Service Manager, and the Business Development and Fundraising Manager.

Main Responsibilities
The following outlines the main areas of work that this role will be involved in:
* plan and manage an annual programme of public and membership engagement work that delivers the strategic aims of the Society;
* implement the Society's programme of work on promoting meteorology amongst the general public, principally theWeather Club activities including editorial responsibility for content in the newsletter and on the website;
* participate in developing and implementing the Society's education and outreach strategy;
* take a leading role in planning and implementing activities associated with recruiting and retaining members, and developing the benefits available for various groups of members;
* maintain the Brand of the Society as widely recognised and respected both within the UK and internationally by raising the awareness of, and interest in, the work of the Society, through media briefings, social networking, corporate publications and other communications and marketing activities; and
* play an active role in developing and promoting the Society's accreditation schemes.

>From time-to-time, in common with other staff in the Secretariat, this person will also be expected to help with any task that is necessary to ensure that the Society and its events run efficiently and achieve the objectives set by the Council. In particular when required it will be necessary to attend Society meetings, either in London or across the UK, to assist with organisational activities and to promote the work of the Society.

Required Knowledge and Skills
The Society is looking for an individual to take on this role who:
* has a good working knowledge of meteorology, ideally as a professional background;
* has excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to produce factual and interesting content for a general public audience and provide support with outreach through the media;
* manages their own working schedule without supervision, delivering to tight deadlines and balancing competing priorities;
* is able to work in a team environment and is used to a project-based approach to working;
* builds strong working partnerships with external collaborators;
* thinks creatively and embraces new ideas and ways of working;
* is prepared to take on responsibility for leading particular projects and delivering the practical benefits to the Society.
* is competent in working with basic IT systems and software packages;

In addition it would be desirable, although not essential, if the individual has:
* been trained in media work, or involved with working closely with the media;
* a background in public engagement work, in particular with professional bodies or learned societies;
* knowledge and practical experience of formal project management methods;
* has experience of developing effective communications and marketing campaigns.

Details and Benefits

The position is based at the Society's Headquarters in Reading, and does on occasion require travelling in the UK, particularly to London. This is a full-time post working 37 hours per week. The Society actively supports flexible working arrangements where practical.

The post holder is entitled to 24.5 days holiday leave per year. This increases to 27.5 days after two years and then 32.5 days per year on completion of more than 12 years' service. This holiday entitlement is in addition to the 8 public holidays. These entitlements are based on full-time hours. In addition to the holiday benefits the Society pays 10% of salary as its employer's pension contribution.

Reporting

The Public Engagement Programme Manager will report to the Chief Executive and will be an active member of the Education and Outreach Committee, the Membership Development Group, the Professional Accreditation Committee and the Climate Science Communications Group and Conferences Organising Committees.

The closing date will be 3rd December.

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary center for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany. Within the department "The Ocean in the Earth System" (OES, director: Prof. Jochem Marotzke), we seek an outstanding candidate to fill the position of a

Group leader/research scientist (f/m, Ref. MPIM-W016)

in the area of

Using ocean observations to understand climate processes and to evaluate climate models

The exact subfield within this area is open; a non-exclusive list includes observations of ocean heat content; observations of ocean circulation via satellite altimetry, gravity measurements, or in-situ; or observations of surface exchanges via remote sensing. Depending on qualifications, the position will be filled at the research scientist level (within the Director's research group, co-led by Prof. Jochem Marotzke and Dr. Johann Jungclaus), or the successful candidate will establish his or her own research group within OES. As a group leader, he or she would have considerable flexibility to define his or her own research agenda within the strategic aims of OES, would be supported in acquiring extramural funds, would receive technical support for making observations, and would have access to PhD studentships from our graduate school IMPRS-ESM.

Requirements:

- PhD in physical oceanography, physical climate science, or a related field;

- Outstanding research capability as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications;

- Experience in making and interpreting ocean observations, either in-situ or remotely sensed;

- Strong motivation to establish a distinct research profile;

- For appointment at group leader level, demonstrated research leadership or promise thereof, as well as willingness to engage in PhD education.



Experience in evaluating climate models is highly desired.

Employment conditions

- The position is offered for up to five years, starting as soon as possible and with the possibility of renewal; renewal would be subject to performance and applicable conditions of employment.

- Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E14), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science and those of the German civil service.

- The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientist and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.
