Dear all,

the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research e.V. (TROPOS) in Leipzig (Germany) is seeking a

Postdoctoral scientist (PostDoc)
to join the research team working on the atmospheric mineral dust cycle and mechanism controlling its interannual variability. The post is located in the Modelling Department at TROPOS.
The main task of the successful candidate will be the evaluation of the MSG-SEVIRI infrared dust index over North Africa and Europe. The focus of the work is on the sensitivity of the satellite dust retrieval with regard to atmospheric dust loading, dust optical properties and atmospheric conditions and involves radiation transfer modeling using RTTOV, atmospheric dust modeling using COSMO-MUSCAT and MSG-SEVIRI satellite data. The post is an exciting opportunity for an early-career researcher to work in the thematic field at the interface between remote sensing and numerical modelling as well as soil surface and the atmosphere.
The candidate should be willing to present the results at international conferences and to publish in peer-review journals. Fluent English in written and oral form is mandatory.
The open position is limited to 2.5 years. The salary level is according to the German public service regulation (TV-L 13). The position is open until filled. The review of the applications will start on 30 November 2015. If the position is not filled, a second cut-off date may be published.
Applicants should have a PhD in atmospheric physics, meteorology, physics or related environmental science disciplines and ideally have a strong background in atmospheric radiation transport calculations and optics. Interest on the atmospheric mineral dust cycle and satellite remote sensing of mineral dust is an advantage.
We are offering the possibility to work in an interdisciplinary team at a highly renowned atmospheric research institute, and in one of the most attractive cities in Germany.
Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply. Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, preference will be given to a disabled person.
Please email your application including a letter of motivation, your CV, transcripts and contacts of 3 references to Kerstin Schepanski (schepanski(at)tropos.de) by 30 November 2015.

The Cambridge Earth System Science (ESS) NERC DTP provides PhD training
across NERC science. Embedded in the outstanding research environment of
the University of Cambridge and the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), it
is organised around three major research themes: Climate, Biology and
Solid Earth.

The CambridgeESS DTP is offering more than 15 fully-funded PhD
studentships to start in October 2016. Hosting partners in Cambridge
are:

• The Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics
• The Department of Archaeology & Anthropology
• The British Antarctic Survey
• The Department of Chemistry
• The Department of Earth Sciences
• The Department of Geography
• The Department of Plant Science
• The Department of Zoology

Students in the CambridgeESS cohort engage in research projects of
global significance across the physical, chemical and biological
sciences, and graduate with strong numerical and modelling skills. A
network of links within national and international science, industry and
government prepares students to become leaders in their chosen fields.

For a full list of projects and information on how to apply see the
CambridgeESS DTP website at www.cam.ac.uk/ess. The application deadline
/ closing date is Wednesday 6 January 2016.

Applicants should have at least a 2.1 in an Honours degree from a UK
University or equivalent standard from an EU or Overseas University
(e.g. CGPA 3.5/4.0) in a relevant subject; for more admissions
information please see
http://essdtp.esc.cam.ac.uk/prospective-students/how-to-apply.

UK and EU students who meet the RCUK residency requirements will be
