Postdoctoral Fellow position at Geophysical Institute

There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral fellow position at Geophysical
Institute within Climate Modelling.

The position is for a period of 2 years.

*About the project/work tasks *

The position is connected to the ERC STERCP grant that focuses on the
development of super climate models.

The simulation and prediction of climate remains a challenge. The position
will focus on applying two alternative methods – flux-correction and super
climate modelling – to enhance climate prediction and reduce uncertainties
in climate change projections. A super climate model is an optimal
combination of different models that influence one another as they run. Our
recent work has shown the potential of this approach to reduce model
errors. The aim of this position will be to use these two different
approaches to understand how model errors impact the simulation and
prediction of climate.

*Qualifications and personal qualities:*

- Applicants must have achieved a PhD or equivalent in meteorology,
oceanography, physics, mathematics or related fields, or have presented the
dissertation for assessment by the closing date for applications. It is a
condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
- Candidates must have a strong background in climate modelling, and
should have good knowledge of climate dynamics.
- Excellent skills are required in programming in large community code
and performing simulations with general circulation models on super
computers and analysis of observations and model data.
- Experience with climate prediction and with any of the following earth
system model NorESM, MPI-ESM, or EC-EARTH, and with data assimilation in
earth system models would be beneficial.
- Proficiency in both written and oral English
- The candidate will work in a lively research environment and should
have good team working skills.

*About the position of postdoctoral fellow:*

The position of postdoctoral fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the
primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic
positions. The fixed-term period for this position is 2 years. Individuals
may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral
fellow at the same institution.

Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the
qualifying work. The project proposal must be prepared in cooperation with
the project manager/supervisor and must also include a schedule. It is a
requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of
employment.

*We can offer:*

- A good and professionally challenging working environment.
- Salary at pay grade 57 (Code 1352) upon appointment, currently NOK
483,700. Further promotions are made according to length of service in the
position.
- Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
- A position in an inclusive workplace (IA enterprise).
- Good welfare benefits.

*Your application must include:*

- A brief account of the applicant's research interests and motivation
for applying for the position.
- The names and contact information for at least two personal referees.
One of these may be the main advisor from the PhD programme.
- CV
- Transcripts and diplomas and official confirmation that the doctoral
thesis has been submitted.
- Relevant certificates/references.
- List of any works of a scientific nature (publication list).
- Any publications in your name.

The application and appendices with certified translations into English or
a Scandinavian language must be uploaded at Jobbnorge.

*General information:*

Detailed information about the position can be obtained by contacting:

Professor Noel Keenlyside, e-mail: noel.keenlyside@uib.no
