POSITION: INTERNATIONAL PHD PROGRAM FELLOWSHIPS BSC LA CAIXA
CLOSING DATE: Monday, 29 February, 2016
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Since 1982, the "la Caixa" Foundation has offered several fellowship programmes aimed at allowing students to undertake postgraduate studies in Spain and abroad. Over the years, thousands of students have advanced their training thanks to a "la Caixa" Foundation fellowship. In 2008, the "la Caixa Foundation launched a new programmed aimed at national and international students. As part of this programme, each year fellowships are awarded to students who wish to complete work toward their doctoral degrees.
BSC-CNS is at the service of the international scientific community and industry that require High Performance Computing resources. The multidisciplinary research team and the computational facilities –including MareNostrum – make BSC-CNS an international center of excellence in e-Science.
Under a collaborative Framework Agreement, the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the "la Caixa" Foundation continue the fellowship programme with a 3rd call. This programme aims to help the recruitment of talented students from across the world by doing their doctoral thesis work in one of the accredited "Severo Ochoa" centers of excellence. The objective of this joint activity is to boost the research capacity of the best research institutions in Spain. For this year, the "la Caixa" Foundation has selected the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) to offer 2 grants more for the academic year 2016-2017 addressed to PhD students. This grant is renewable up to four years.
BSC-CNS is looking for young scientists from the national and international community. We encourage applications from highly motivated engineers and computational scientists with outstanding qualifications. Successful candidates will join research groups with top-level scientists and will carry out their research in cutting-edge areas of Computer Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and Computer Applications in Sciences and Engineering.

UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS DARTMOUTH
DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
Postdoctoral Fellow – Ocean Process Studies
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral fellow to study oceanic submesoscale processes, their implications for vertical fluxes on scales of 100 m - 10 km, and their impact on phytoplankton productivity in seasonally variable regimes, using modeling and analysis. Knowledge of ocean dynamics and modeling at small and large scales, mixing parameterizations, data analysis, and theoretical oceanography is a plus.
The position is funded by an NSF collaborative study with with Dr. Amala Mahadevan, Senior Scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and offers broad interdisciplinary numerical and theoretical work motivated by observations. The fellow will also interact with graduate students and scientists at the College of Engineering and the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) at UMass Dartmouth. Other responsibilities may include assistance in grant proposal writing and general lab/student supervision.
The minimum qualifications are a Ph.D. in oceanography, engineering, environmental physics or a closely-related field. The candidate should be highly motivated and have demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within a research group. Organizational proficiency and strong oral and written communication skills are essential. The initial appointment at UMass Dartmouth will be for one year, with possibilities for extension to a second year.
Applicants should send a letter stating your interests and qualifications, along with a current curriculum vitae, a brief narrative describing your professional goals, and a list of three references, electronically

We are looking for a young scientist to join our group, at the Physical
Oceanography Department, CICESE - Baja California / Mexico.
The position is linked to the project "Synthesis of Historical
Observations using Novel Model Approaches to Improve Understanding and
Predictability of Deep Gulf of Mexico Circulation".
This is a POST-DOC position aiming to understand the deep circulation in
the Gulf of Mexico. We will use a state-of-the-art numerical simulation
with 4DVar data assimilation (ROMS-IS4DVar) to generate a reanalysis of
the ocean state. The analysis of the deep circulation will be done based
on model results and available datasets (specially mooring data).
Previous experience with the ROMS ocean model is highly desirable. The
position is initially for 1 year, with possible extension for another year
depending on performance and funding.
Please, serious candidates only!
Qualifications:
- PhD. in Physical Oceanography or equivalent;
- Experience running and/or analyzing the outputs of oceanic numerical
models.
- Proven good communication skills (written and spoken) in English.
Desirable:
- Experience with the ROMS model
- Experience with data assimilation.
- Be able to work/communicate in Spanish.
For more information, please contact:
