The Swiss Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss is
the Swiss National Weather Service. We record, monitor and forecast
weather and climate in Switzerland and thus make a sustainable
contribution to the well-being of the community and to the benefit of
industry, science and the environment. The Climate Department carries
out statistical analyses of observed and modelled climate data and is
responsible for providing the results for users and customers. Within
the team Climate Prediction we currently have a job opening for the
following post:

Postdoc on climate change and heat stress

Your main task is to calculate potential heat stress for current and
future climate over Europa that will serve as a basis for assessing the
impact of climate change on the health of workers. You derive complex
heat indices from climate model output and validate them against
observational datasets. You will further investigate the predictability
of heat stress several weeks ahead on the basis of long-range weather
forecasts. In close collaboration with international partners of the EU
H2020 project Heat-Shield you will setup a prototype system of climate
services, including an early warning system. Your work hence
substantially contributes to a heat-based risk assessment for different
key industries and potential productivity losses across Europe. The
results will be a central basis for policy making and to plan climate
adaptation measures. Your responsibilities will further include
publishing results in scientific journals and reports, reporting and
coordinating our contribution to the European project and presenting
results at national and international conferences.

As a candidate for this post, you will have a university degree in
natural sciences and a doctorate in the field of climatology or
meteorology. You will have experience in handling data from climate
models and in statistical downscaling. You will be familiar with Linux,
proficient in handling very large and complex data sets and able to
implement different statistical methods. You will have experience in
various programming languages (i.e. R, python) and tools (i.e. shell,
CDO, NCL). Your working languages will be both, German and English and
you must be willing to travel regularly.

We are looking for a motivated person who has good communication skills
and enjoys working in a team. We offer varied and interesting activities
in a modern company and a diverse working environment at the interface
between research and application.

The office is located at Zurich Airport. The post is limited to two years.

Please submit your application online via the federal government jobs
portal: <www.stelle.admin.ch>.

Dear all,

Apologies for cross-posting.

Advanced Computing for Earth Sciences (ACES), sponsored by the
University of Virginia Advanced Research Computing Services (ARCS)
group, NASA, and U.Va.'s Department of Environmental Sciences, is an
exciting opportunity for students interested in computational modeling
for atmospheric, ocean, climate, geophysical, and other Earth sciences.
Students enrolled in the ACES program acquire hands-on application
computing experience as well as training in the essentials of software
engineering and high-performance computing. A total of 20 students will
be selected to attend the summer school on grounds at the University of
Virginia. They will then be placed in 8-week paid internship programs at
various NASA research centers across the country. Some previous
programming experience is helpful but is not required.Students with
advanced computer science skills who are interested in applications for
Earth sciences are also encouraged to apply. Those admitted to the
summer school will be provided with housing, two meals per day during
the work week, and a generous stipend for all other meals. Travel
expenses are covered for up to a maximum of $750 per student. Only U.S.
citizens are eligible to apply. We accept graduate students and
undergraduates who will be completing their third or fourth years of study.

Applications are due by March 1, 2016. Please visit the following link
