The Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine
Research (AWI),
section 'Atmospheric Circulation' in Potsdam, Germany,
invites applications for

two PhD positions

starting as soon as possible.
These positions are within the new German Research Foundation (DFG)
Transregional Collaborative Research Centre 'Arctic climate change'

Position #1
Title: Snowfall and and its changes in the Arctic
Description:
What are the seasonal regional patterns of snowfall,
snowfall–to–precipitation ratio, and snow cover and its changes?
We will attempt to connect these to changes in the atmosphere (i.e.,
temperature, humidity, vertical stability, circulation)
and in the sea–ice conditions. For this, regional climate model
simulations will be carried out and analyzed. Complementary
reanalysis and satellite data will be used to evaluate the simulations
in cooperation with our project partner Cologne University.
Contact: Dr. Annette Rinke, Annette.Rinke[at]awi.de.

Position #2
Title: Representativeness of the Ny–Ålesund atmospheric observations
across the Arctic
Description:
The observations of the Ny-Ålesund meteorological instrument suite will
be combined and analyzed in terms of synoptic
situation, boundary layer properties and air back–trajectories.
Addressing the long–term characteristics of the Ny-Ålesund
atmospheric column, its variability and connections to large–scale and
local meteorological patterns, the comparison with
observations at other Arctic sites and platforms (supersites, ship–based
and airborne campaigns) will allow to characterize
the meteorological representativeness of the Ny-Ålesund site and to link
with climate–oriented and process–oriented model
output from other subprojects within (AC)3.
Contact: Dr. Marion Maturilli, Marion.Maturilli[at]awi.de

Profiles of the Candidates:
The successful candidates should hold a M.Sc. degree in physics,
meteorology, geosciences, or related fields.
Good skills in data processing and programming (Fortran, C, Matlab, R,
or similar) are required.
Good English language skills are a prerequisite.
A willingness to participate in field campaigns in the Arctic is a
requirement for the position #2.

The positions are limited to 3 years. The salary will be paid in
accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen
Dienstes (TVöD Bund), salary level 13 (66%). The place of employment
will be Potsdam.
The AWI aims to increase the percentage of female scientists among its
employees and therefore encourages qualified
candidates to apply. The AWI fosters the compatibility of work and
family through various means. We have been awarded
the certificate "Career and Family" because of our engagement in the
area of work-life compatibility.
Disabled applicants will be given preference when equal qualifications
are present.

As Ph.D. student at AWI you will obtain the opportunity to subscribe to
the Helmholtz Graduate School
for Polar and Marine Research 'POLMAR' (http://polmar.awi.de ).

Please send your application with the standard documentation (cover
letter with motivation, CV, degree certificates,
abstract of the Master thesis, names and addresses of two referees)
quoting the reference number
44/D/Kli-P (position#1) and number 45/D/Kli-P (position#2)
per e-mail (all documents merged into one PDF file) to
Sigrun.Graening@awi.de
Review of applications will start on March 1st, 2016 and continued until
the positions are filled.

Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Network Design for Ocean Carbon Cycle
Monitoring
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Institut Pierre Simon Laplace
Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (IPSL/LSCE),
Gif-sur-Yvette, France

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in
Network Design for Ocean Carbon Cycle Monitoring. The position is linked
to the research and innovation project ATLANTOS "Optimising and
enhancing the Integrated Atlantic Ocean Observing Systems"
(https://www.atlantos-h2020.eu/) funded by the EU Horizon 2020 scheme.
The main focus of the position lies on the identification of an optimal
observational network for enabling ocean carbon system estimates. The
postholder will be expected to develop a novel approach for deriving
carbon system estimates combining output from high- resolution
operational models, remote sensing observations, in situ measurements
and statistical models. This approach will be applied to the
reconstruction of pCO2 fields over the past decades, as well as to the
operational release of carbon system estimates. Applicants should hold a
doctorate in physical oceanography, marine biogeochemistry or applied
mathematics (or equivalent) and have a background in statistical
modeling. Candidates are expected to demonstrate computing skills and to
be familiar with LINUX based environments.

The candidate will be expected to present results at national and
international meetings. The position is for a period of 18 to 24 months
pending on salary and experience. The position is based at Laboratoire
des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE,
http://www.lsce.ipsl.fr/). LSCE is part of the Institut Pierre Simon
Laplace (IPSL, http://www.ipsl.fr/en/). Their research mission is to
contribute to a better understanding of the interactions between human
activities in the Earth system as well as the environment and climate
dynamics at different time scales. The research will be carried out in
close collaboration with U. Schuster (University of Exeter, UK) and will
involve repeated short visits at UoE.

Applicants are invited to submit a brief statement of research
interests, CV and details of two referees to M. Gehlen
(marion.gehlen@lsce.ipsl.fr).

Ocean carbon cycle scientist

We have an open position at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research/Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen. The position is linked to the project Biogeochemical Change and Detection (BIGCHANGE), and we are specifically looking for a carbon cycle modeller who will apply the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM) to simulate and determine mean ocean physical and biogeochemical states in past warm climates with the aim to contextualise and dynamically interpret proxy reconstructions. The specific periods of interest are the warm Pliocene and the different warm stages of glacial-interglacial cycles. Overall the work should add to our understanding of the role of the ocean for atmospheric greenhouse gas variability.

Vacancy: Researcher in Carbon Cycle Data Assimilation at Lund
University, Sweden

The Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science is seeking to
appoint a Researcher with a strong background in carbon cycle modelling,
data assimilation, remote sensing, applied mathematics or physics to
work on assimilating remote sensing data into a terrestrial carbon cycle
model.

The position is part of a newly funded project by the Swedish National
Space Board. The project will use passive microwave measurements of soil
moisture and/or other vegetation properties from the SMOS mission with a
terrestrial biosphere model in a Carbon Cycle Data Assimilation System.
The data will be used to constrain model parameters in the formulation
of the processes regulating the terrestrial carbon cycle. The results
will help to improve estimates of terrestrial carbon and water fluxes.

The researcher will be part of an international team operating and
further developing a world-leading system capable of quantifying
terrestrial sources and sinks of carbon dioxide through the assimilation
of various data sources (atmospheric CO2 concentrations,
satellite-derived vegetation activity, in-situ flux measurements etc.).

The post will be available for 24 months, with a preferred starting date
of May 2016.

Closing date for applications: 07 March 2016

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and
experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and
an asset.
