In the /Boundary Layer Meteorology/ research group at the Institute of
Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences of the Goethe University Frankfurt there
will be, on condition of final project approval, a vacancy for a

*Post-doctoral Scientist (E13 TV-GU)*

within HD(CP)^2 (http://www.hdcp2.eu/). The appointment will be for three years.
Optimal starting date would be April 1st 2016.

The Boundary Layer Meteorology group is a member of the Hans-Ertel-Centre of
weather research, a virtual centre of five research groups which have a close
partnership with the German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD).

The successful candidate will join a dynamic team working on improving our
understanding of the atmospheric boundary layer and the development of
innovative, scale-adaptive methods for parameterizing the boundary layer in
numerical weather prediction models. The successfulcandidate will carry out
research necessary to improve the representation of organized shallow convection
in numerical weather prediction and climate models. Using large-eddy
simulations, the impact of large-scale organized motions, such as cloud streets
or cold-pool induced coherent structures, on the second-order moments and their
budgets will be investigated and improved parameterizations of the individual
terms in the budget equations will be tested.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated person who likes to work in a
team and has a PhD in meteorology, physics, mathematics or related discipline,
with profound knowledge of fluid dynamics of the atmosphere.

We expect:

·Proven experience in modeling and analysis of atmospheric phenomena, preferably
in the area of the atmospheric boundary layer and large-eddy simulations

·Strong programming skills

·The willingness to present and publish results at scientific conferences and in
peer-reviewed scientific journals

·Fluency in English (written and oral)

The successful candidate will be part of a young, emerging research group in a
future-oriented research area with close partnerships with research groups at
other universities and the DWD.

Applications, including CV, statement of interest, certificates, should be sent
to Juerg Schmidli (schmidli@iau.uni-frankfurt.de) and Annika Schomburg
(annika.schomburg@dwd.de <mailto:annika.schomburg@dwd.de>). Deadline for
application is 5 March 2016.

PhD scholarship: Understanding extremes in Australia's variable rainfall

Project

This project will address questions about the range and causes of Australia's variable rainfall. Australia experiences highly variable rainfall, which is influenced by both unforced climate variability and anthropogenic climate forcings. Hydrological extremes, such as drought and floods, have high socio-economic costs for Australia, so understanding the range of variability and processes that cause changes is critical.

This PhD project will investigate the influence of anthropogenic (e.g. greenhouse gases, aerosols and land use change) and natural (volcanic eruptions and solar variability) climate forcingson hydrological trends and extremes. Using climate models, observations and long-term palaeoclimate records, this project will investigate the processes behind recently observed hydroclimatic events in Australia, such as the persistent decline in rainfall in southwestern Western Australia, the extended Millennium Drought in southeastern Australia and the record eastern Australian rains in 2011.

Research Environment

The candidate will be supervised by Dr Sophie Lewis (ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science, Fenner School of Environment and Society) and Associate Professor Nerilie Abram
(ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science and Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University). The student will be based at The Australian National University in Canberra, with collaboration with the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

The candidate will become part of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science- an international research consortium of five Australian universities (The University of New South Wales, Monash University, The University of Melbourne, The University of Tasmania and The Australian National University) and a suite of outstanding national and international Partner Organizations. The Centre provides excellent opportunities for travel and graduate student development. http://www.climatescience.org.au

Expressions of interest

The successful candidate will receive a stipend of $26,288 (2016 rate) per year which will be indexed annually for the duration of the award. The duration of the award shall be for three years with a maximum possible extension of up to six months (assessed on a case by case basis). The successful candidate will be able to adapt the project to match their background, interests and expertise. To be eligible, a student must have completed a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours, or be regarded by ANU as having an equivalent level of attainment.

If you are interested in applying please complete our Expression of Interest form:
https://www.climatescience.org.au/content/707-graduate-opportunities-expressions-interest

Note- this is not an official application, if your expression of interest is accepted we will guide you through the application process.

Deadline for submitting Expression of Interest- Feb 29, 2016.

Postdoc Position (m/f)
code no. 2016/KS 1
The place of employment is Geesthacht.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near
Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. You can find more
information at <http://www.hzg.de>.

The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht
invites applications for a 18-month Postdoc Position (m/f) within the
project Palmod 'Form the Last Interglacial to the Anthropocene -
Modelling a Complete Glacial Cycle'. More information about the project
can be found at _https://www.palmod.de_ <https://www.palmod.de/>.
This new project, a large collaborative effort among many institutions
across Germany, aims at simulating the Earth's climate over a full
glacial-interglacial cycle over the past 135 thousand years with a
state-of-the art Earth System Model and at using a comprehensive set of
climate proxy records to reconstruct the Earth's climate over this
period in the most detailed way possible. One of the expected outcome is
an evaluation of the skill of Earth System Models to simulate climate
variability at these long time scales.

The contribution of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht to the project
involves the analysis of compilations of climate proxy records with the
objective of designing statistical models to reconstruct past climate at
millennial time scales. Specifically, the tasks that should be carried
out by the successful candidate involve: the development of
proxy-specific error models, the test of statistical methods in the
context of comprehensive Earth System Models (Pseudo-Proxy Experiments),
application of methods on the model data generated in the time frame of
the project, attendance and presentation of results at workshops and
conferences, and preparation of scientific publication for international
peer-reviewed journals.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht expects candidates to have completed a
Ph.D. related to the simulation and/or analysis of past climates, that
can demonstrate a profound familiarity with statistical methods used for
climate reconstructions in paleoclimatology, and that also have
experience with the processing of large data sets produced by coupled
Earth System Models using UNIX/Linux platforms and programming languages
(Matlab, R, FOTRAN), preferentially in the context of super computing
environments. A good publication record in international journals is a
clear advantage.

We offer an appropriate salary related to the German public tariff
(TV-AVH) plus the usual social benefits for the public employment
sector. The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is an equal opportunity
employer for women, minorities, and people with disabilities, and
strives to increase the percentage of women in the science sector.
Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered
preferentially.

Appointment will begin as soon as possible. Please send your application
indicating job offer code no. 2016/KS 1to the e-mail-address:
personal@hzg.de_ <mailto:personal@hzg.de>and include your CV, a
statement of interests and contact details of three references in a
single pdf file. Closing date for applications is March, 16^th , 2016.

PhD position in New Zealand

Cloud properties and occurrence over the Southern Ocean are subject to
substantial biases in the current generation of climate models. The
Cloud and Aerosols project in the New Zealand Deep South National
Science Challenge programme aims to make dedicated in situ measurements
and use existing data to improve the representation of clouds and
cloud-aerosol coupling in the New Zealand Earth System Model. A
fully-funded PhD position entitled 'In-situ and remote sensing
measurements of Southern Ocean Cloud and Aerosol Properties' is
currently available. This studentship will be jointly supported by Dr.
Mike Harvey (NIWA, Wellington) and Dr. Adrian McDonald (University of
Canterbury, Christchurch).

The student selected will initially be based in Wellington at the NIWA
Greta point facility and be involved in the development and testing of
hardware that will allow the vertical structure and aerosol content of
the lowest kilometre of the atmosphere to be measured. Later work may
require the student to move to Christchurch dependent on progress and
the needs of the observational programme. This project offers
significant opportunities for travel linked to fieldwork with plans for
testing in New Zealand and a number of ship deployments in the Southern
Ocean. An interest in instrumentation and an understanding of remote
sensing techniques would be very desirable.

We are seeking highly qualified and motivated scientists. Candidates are
expected to have a BSc Honours or Masters degree in Physics or an
equivalent, when they start their Ph.D. project. Some experience with
atmospheric physics and aerosol sampling will be an advantage. The
willingness to cooperate in a geographically distributed team is also
required. We also expect that you are able to communicate your results
in oral and written form in very good English. Applicants should submit
an academic transcript, a CV and the name of two academic referees
before the deadline.

Deadline to apply: Wednesday 14 March 2016 at 17:00 (NZST)

Applications and enquiries to <Mike.Harvey@niwa.co.nz> or
