The Swiss Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss
(<www.meteoswiss.ch>) is the Swiss National Weather Service. We record,
monitor and forecast weather and climate in Switzerland and thus make a
sustainable contribution to the well-being of the community and to the
benefit of industry, science and the environment. The Climate Department
carries out statistical analyses of observed and modelled climate data
and is responsible for providing the results for users and customers.
Within the team Climate Monitoring we currently have a job opening for
the following post:

Research position in the development project CLIMANDES-2 on
climate services for agriculture, 80%

CLIMANDES (climate services with emphasis on the Andes as a support for
decision making) is a development project of Switzerland and Peru on the
topic of climate services. Key aspects of the project are monitoring and
seasonal predictions of precipitation and droughts in the Andes with the
goal of providing tailored climate information for agriculture.

As part of the international project team you will work on
post-processing, tailoring, and verification of seasonal forecasts. You
will calculate climate indicators that are relevant for the specific
needs of agriculture and implement them for monitoring forecasting. In
these tasks you will closely cooperate with project members of
MeteoSwiss and the Peruvian national weather service (SENAMHI). You will
also support SENAMHI's quality control of climate observations and will
be involved in educational activities on climate services in Peru.

As a candidate for this post, you have a university degree in natural
sciences and ideally a doctorate in the field of climatology,
meteorology, geography, statistics or environmental sciences. You are
experienced in statistical analyses of very large and complex data sets
and in the handling of climate model data. You are familiar with Linux,
capable of programming in "R" and other computing languages. A flair for
practical and application-oriented solutions is required for this
position and experience in development projects, agrometeorology, or
climate analyses in South America are beneficial.

We expect you to spend several weeks at our project partner's office in
Peru, therefore excellent skills in both spoken and written Spanish are
essential. In addition, a good knowledge of English is required and
experience in two of the official languages (German, French, Italian)
are beneficial.

We are looking for a motivated person who has good communication skills
and enjoys working in a team. We offer varied and interesting activities
in a modern company and a diverse working environment at the interface
between research and application.

Our office is located at Zurich Airport. The post is limited to two years.

Please submit your application online via the federal government jobs
portal: www.stelle.admin.ch

Review of applications will start on 10 March and continue until the
position is filled.
