Dear All,

EDF Trading have an exciting opportunity in our Meteorology function, which is part of our Power Trading Desk.

EDF Trading is a 100% owned subsidiary of the EDF Group, Europe's leading electricity producer.
EDF Trading is a leader in the international wholesale energy markets. It manages a portfolio of assets which give it the ability to source, supply, transport, store, blend and convert physical commodities around the world. These capabilities enable EDF Trading to deliver essential asset optimisation services, risk management and wholesale market access to the EDF Group and its third party customers, helping them to realise the value inherent in their asset portfolios.

We are looking for a Quantitative Analyst Meteorologist to join our Power Trading team. Reporting to the Senior Meteorologist, this role will assist with the analysis of statistical data of large weather and climate datasets. You would be responsible for conducting data mining and in-depth analysis of large weather and climate datasets including re-analysis data. Assisting with building tools and predictive models, you will be able to utilise your experience and academics for our meteorology desk, and work with the team to produce further insight for our trading desks.

This is an exciting role, in a fast paced environment, where your work and analysis has a direct impact our business strategies and decisions. You will be exposed to a variety of stakeholders, and will shape your analysis to reflect commercial outcomes and risks.

This is a great opportunity for a graduate or post graduate studying Meteorology, whom has a strong understanding of weather forecasting. Exposure to forecasting within Europe would be beneficial, as would any previous or current work experience in this space. An understanding of the commercial trading environment would be beneficial also, but not essential.
A strong numerical modelling acumen, experience of MATLAB, GRIB and NetCDF programming and advanced Excel and statistical analysis would be key skills we would require for this role. Understanding of NWP models and outputs would also be advantageous.
If you would like more details about this position please contact myself - Jas Flora ( jas.flora@edftrading.com<mailto:jas.flora@edftrading.com> , 0207 061 4124)

Best Regards

Jas

PhD environmental sciences Ghana

Introduction:

Wageningen University (The Netherlands), The University for Development Studies Tamalé
Ghana, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies, and Khulna University Bangladesh and other
international partners (see: www.waterapps.net) are offering a PhD scholarship for their
collaborative programme entitled:

Waterapps; Water information services for sustainable food production in peri-urban delta areas
in Ghana and Bangladesh.

The programme will develop tailor made water information services with and for farmers in periurban
areas in the urbanising deltas of Accra, Ghana and Khulna, Bangladesh to improve water
and food security in river deltas. This will be done by 1) combining mobile information
technology (like apps) with latest insights on knowledge sharing; 2) integrating weather model
results with observations of groundwater trends and river flows; and 3) attuning knowledge about
adaptive decision making and enabling governance structures to local situations. These insights
will be used to co-create and test water information services, consisting of knowledge sharing
platforms and virtual communities. The co-production of water information services with local
farmers will empower and improve livelihoods of small/medium farmers and build capacity for
enhancing sustainable food production. Furthermore it will result in a business case by delivering
design principles for viable farmer-oriented water information services in other urban-rural delta
zones in the developing world.

Function description:
You will conduct your PhD research in the Greater Accra Region case study. In this case study
knowledge sharing platforms and virtual communities on water availability will be
operationalised by engaging with farmers and farmers associations and other stakeholders and by
leveraging the technology.
You will research the development process and functioning of knowledge sharing platforms and
virtual communities. Evolving information needs of users of water information services and the
design and functioning of knowledge sharing platforms and virtual communities will be
monitored and analysed. Protocols for field observations on weather, groundwater and water
quality are made. And the impact of water information services on decision making on water and
food production in the case study areas will be studied.
Your focus is on the relation between field observations and model results on seasonal weather
forecasts. And on information needs of water users in peri-urban agriculture.
