Subject: [Met-jobs] PhD position available at IUP Bremen - Satellite
based remote sensing of halogens in the Arctic atmosphere
Message-ID: <56D844CF.6010002@iup.physik.uni-bremen.de>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"; Format="flowed"
The Institute of Environmental Physics and Remote Sensing at the
University of Bremen is offering a PhD position (TVL 13, 50%), starting
as soon as possible for the duration of three years in the field of
*Satellite based remote sensing of halogens in the Arctic atmosphere*
The Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) at the University of
Bremen, department of Prof. J. P. Burrows, has been analysing satellite
observations of atmospheric composition for more than 2 decades. One of
the methods applied is the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy
(DOAS) which enables the detection of a number of stratospheric and
tropospheric trace gases, facilitating evaluation of their spatial
distribution, sources and sinks, as well as their changes in time.
The(AC)^3 project (_http://ac3-tr.de/_), which is funded by DFG
(Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), investigates the increase
intemperature in the Arctic and its consequences. Within the framework
of this project, data products from different satellite remote sensors
shouldbe developed and, in addition to numerical model data, applied for
investigating formation and spatial distribution of halogen oxidesin the
Arctic atmosphere. Major sourcesof atmospheric halogens are young sea
ice (as itis highly concentrated in sea salt)andoceanic phytoplancton.
The release of halogens to the atmosphere is also influenced by local
weather conditions. Once released into the lower atmosphere, halogens
can cause efficient depletion of ozone, which is a major greenhouse gas.
As such, halogens indirectly impact on radiative properties of the
atmosphere and in turn temperature of the Arctic. This work will be
carried out in collaboration with other scientists at IUP and also from
the Alfred-Wegener-Institute in Bremerhaven.
Requirements:
* A master or diploma in physics or a related discipline
* Very good knowledge of at least one higher programming language
* Interest in data analysis and atmospheric research
* Good knowledge in spoken and written German and / or English
* Willingness to go on business trips
* Good knowledge and experience in at least one of the following
fields: physics and chemistry of the atmosphere, meteorology, remote
sensing of the Earth system, analysis of numerical model data
The Institute of Environmental Physics offers a friendly working
atmosphere and excellent working environment. The position is integrated
into the national scientific framework of the DFG funded project (AC)^3,
. More information on the institute and the DOAS group can be found at
_http://www.iup.physik.uni-bremen.de/eng/_and _http://www.doas-bremen.de
<http://www.doas-bremen.de/>_.
As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female
employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. In
case of equal personal aptitudes and qualification priority will be
given to disabled persons.
Please send applications including standard documentation (CV, copies of
diplomas, letter of motivation) in electronic form (pdf format, one file
only) with reference to job advertisement number *A **40**/16* until
*15**.**03**.2016* to
