Dear Colleagues,

I would ask you to distribute the below and attached call for Letters of Intent for doctoral studies in order to reach excellent students interested in doctoral studies in the Doctoral Programme in Atmospheric Sciences (ATM-DP) at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Please, note that this call is intended for those, who do not yet have a contact with a possible supervisor (in ATM-DP, University of Helsinki or FMI) for their desired doctoral studies.

With best regards,
Pauli Paasonen, PhD
Post-doctoral researcher
Coordinator, Doctoral Programme in Atmospheric Sciences

Division of Atmospheric Sciences
Department of Physics
University of Helsinki
Finland

---------------------------------------------------
Call for Letters of Intent
The Doctoral Programme in Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Helsinki – educating the next generation of top-level atmospheric scientists
The Doctoral Programme in Atmospheric Sciences (ATM-DP) is one of the seven doctoral programmes within the Doctoral School of Natural Sciences at the University of Helsinki. ATM-DP is an international and multi-disciplinary programme, educating currently ca. 130 doctoral candidates. The candidates come from all parts of the world (over one third from outside Finland) and their main subjects vary from theoretical physics to forest ecology and management and to environmental change and policy.
The Doctoral Programme in Atmospheric Sciences calls for
LETTERS OF INTENT FOR DOCTORAL STUDIES
in order to bring prospective doctoral candidates with strong academic record into contact with ATM-DP supervisors.
The most impressive submitters of a Letter of Intent will be contacted and interviewed, after which supervisors may decide to help them in preparing a research proposal for the next call for university-funded positions in autumn 2016 or for external funding for doctoral studies. N.B.: the possible mutual interest arising from the Letter of Intent does not guarantee the admission to pursue doctoral degree or work at the University of Helsinki.
The submitters of the Letters of Intent are expected to hold a second-cycle degree (e.g. Master's) or to presumably obtain such during year 2016. In Finland, the doctoral studies can be started only after obtaining a second-cycle degree. Students interested in pursuing graduate studies after completion of Bachelor's thesis are encouraged to apply to our Master's Degree Programme in Atmospheric Sciences (ATM-MP, https://www.helsinki.fi/en/atmospheric-sciences-master-of-science-2-years/1.2.246.562.17.12444601822). The Master's Degree Programmes have strong records of preparing students for continuing directly to the Doctoral Programmes.
The University of Helsinki -units participating in ATM-DP

• Faculty of Science:
> Department of Physics (Division of Atmospheric Sciences)
> Department of Chemistry (Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry, Laboratory of Physical Chemistry)
> Department of Geosciences and Geography

• Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry:
> Department of Forest Sciences

• Faculty of Bio- and Environmental Sciences:
> Department of Environmental Sciences

The research topics of ATM-DP include:
• Aerosol and environmental physics
• Aerosol-cloud-climate interactions
• Air quality
• Atmospheric chemistry
• Atmosphere modelling
• Biosphere-atmosphere interactions
• Carbon, water, nitrogen and aerosol cycles and balances
• Climate change effects and mitigation
• Development of aerosol, remote sensing, radar, and environmental technology
• Dynamic meteorology
• Earth system modelling
• Ecosystem processes
• Hydrology
• Limnology
• Oceanography
• Remote sensing of ecosystems and atmosphere
• Remote sensing of land cover and land use change
• Snow and ice studies
• Urban and indoor aerosols and health effects
• Urban meteorology

Submitting Letters of Intent
The Letters of Intent must be submitted electronically by filling in the form, which can be found at http://blogs.helsinki.fi/atm-dp/call_for_letters_of_intent_2016/ after the call opens on 1.5.2016. The deadline for submitting the application is 31.5.2016, 24:00 EEST (UTC/GMT +3 hours).
The attachments listed below must be provided in one pdf-file in English, Finnish or Swedish. For the documents in other languages, translation to one of these languages must be included. The documents required in the attachment for the Letter of Intent:
• Scanned copy of second-cycle/Master's degree certificate (or confirmation for presumably obtaining such during year 2016 by a thesis supervisor)
• Scanned copy of transcript of records including all passed course units, their completion dates, grades (including the grading scale of the institution) and credits awarded
The following documents can be provided either as attachments or by filling the appropriate field in the electronic form.
• Curriculum vitae
• List of publications (if applicable)
• Motivation letter (max. 1 page)
In addition, a recommendation letter from applicant's MSc (or other thesis) supervisor is needed. Without a recommendation by the supervisor indicated in the electronic form the Letter of Intent is not considered. The recommendations are required by 5.6.2016 (more information in the electronic form).
General on doctoral studies at the University of Helsinki
The admission to pursue doctoral studies is given by the faculties of the University of Helsinki. The doctoral programmes recommend the admission of the best applicants to the faculties and are responsible for the doctoral education. The doctoral studies are designed to take four years. The main duties of a doctoral candidate are to work on his or her own doctoral thesis and to complete postgraduate studies (minimum of 40 ECTS). The duties also include teaching and other tasks. Funding for a doctoral candidate may come from various sources, from the university, various projects and foundations. The admission to pursue doctoral studies does not imply funding.

For further information on ATM-DP, please see http://blogs.helsinki.fi/atm-dp/.
