The Institute of Environmental Physics and Remote Sensing at the University
of Bremen is offering a PhD position (TVL 13, 19.6 hours per week), starting
as soon as possible for the duration of three years in the field of

Remote Sensing of Halogen Oxides with the Sentinel 5 Precursor
Satellite

The Institute of Environmental Physics at the University of Bremen has been
analysing satellite observations of atmospheric composition for more than 2
decades. One of the methods used is the Differential Optical Absorption
Spectroscopy (DOAS) which enables the detection of a number of stratospheric
and tropospheric trace gases, facilitating the evaluation of their spatial
distributions, sources and sinks, as well as their changes over time.
The European Sentinel 5 Precursor satellite (S5P) due for launch by the end
of 2016 will provide the opportunity to retrieve atmospheric trace gases
with unprecedented sensitivity and spatial resolution
(http://www.tropomi.eu/). Starting from existing retrieval algorithms and
software, the aim of this PhD is to develop and improve methods for the
detection and quantification of atmospheric distributions of bromine oxide
and iodine oxide using S5P data. Both BrO and IO have mainly natural sources
and play important roles in atmospheric ozone chemistry. The satellite data
will be validated and used for atmospheric case studies. This work is
integrated in the other S5P activities at IUP Bremen as well as the (AC)3
project (http://ac3-tr.de/) funded by the Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft.

Requirements:

* A very good master in Physics or a related discipline
* Very good knowledge in at least one higher programming language
* Interest in atmospheric science and data evaluation
* Good knowledge in spoken and written German and / or English
* Good knowledge and experience in one or several of the fields Physics and
Chemistry of the atmosphere, remote sensing, radiative transfer, data
evaluation.

The Institute of Environmental Physics offers a friendly working atmosphere
and excellent working environment. The position is integrated into the S5P
activities at IUP which are performed in collaboration with MPI Mainz.

More information on the institute and the DOAS group can be found at
http://www.iup.physik.uni-bremen.de/eng/ and http://www.doas-bremen.de.

As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female
employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of
equal personal aptitudes and qualification priority will be given to
disabled persons.

Please direct applications and questions in electronic form until April 24,
2016 to
