Postdoctoral research position in aerosol remote sensing at the University
of Brussels (ULB, Belgium).

The Atmospheric Spectroscopy group at the Université Libre de Bruxelles
(http://www.ulb.ac.be/cpm/atmosphere.html) specializes in satellite remote
sensing of the Earth and its atmosphere, especially using the IASI
hyperspectral infrared sounder. We currently have a vacancy for a
postdoctoral researcher to work on the development and expansion of
retrieval algorithms for airborne volcanic ash and windblown dust from IASI.

Candidates should have a PhD in an exact science (preferable atmospheric
science, physics, chemistry or related fields). A broad programming
experience is a must. Experience in the field of satellite remote sensing is
desirable, but not mandatory. The position is available immediately (to
start on or before September 2016) and foreseen for two or three years,
subject to a yearly renewal. Legal conditions for this grant require (i) the
candidate not being in Belgium for work or residence for more than 24
months the last three years before recruitment and (ii) not having their PhD
for more than 8 years before recruitment.

Applicants should send a CV (including publication list) and cover letter to
Lieven Clarisse (lclariss@ulb.ac.be) whom can also be contacted for any
queries regarding this position.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and its Meteorological Research Division (MRD), located in Dorval, Quebec, Canada, invites applications to an open post-doctoral position. The position is located in the Numerical Prediction Research section (better known as Recherche en prevision numerique - RPN) and is co-funded by the Institut National de Sante Publique du Quebec (INSPQ) and Health Canada. The RPN laboratory is internationally recognized for its research related to the development of dynamical and physical aspects of atmospheric modelling systems, and has the mandate of implementing and improving operational numerical environmental prediction systems at the Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC).

Benefits and conditions for the post-doctoral position are based on the program of Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government Laboratories of the National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada.

http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Students-Etudiants/PD-NP/Laboratories-Laboratoires/index_eng.asp

The salary is approximately $60,000 Canadian per year. Funding is available for a period of two years, possibly renewable for a third year. The preferred starting date is 3 October 2016 (but could be later depending on candidates availability).

The primary focus of this work is on the evaluation of the impact of urban planing strategies on heat-related meteorological aspects, in particular for areas with larger socioeconomic risks in the eastern part of the Montreal metropolitan area (starting with a project of land-use modifications along one of the highway). ECCC's sub-km atmospheric model and high-resolution Surface Prediction System (SPS) both including representation of urban processes will be used and developed as part of this project. Numerical experiments will be conducted to evaluate the impact of modified landscape on near-surface meteorology and heat stress indicators during selected periods of intense heat. In addition to these urban planning and mitigation experiments, the SPS system will be tested and implemented as a forecasting tool for all major cities in Canada.

Enquiries and applications including a short statement of motivation, CV, list of publications, and contact information for two professional referees can be directed to:

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in the Predictability of Weather and Climate group within the sub-Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics (AOPP).

The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration of 12 months, with the possibility of extension to April 2019. The post is funded by the Office of Naval Research and its primary aim is to improve future forecasts of extreme weather events and tropical cyclones by exploiting recent progress in the development of hardware with reduced numerical precision.

The successful applicant is expected to work closely with Professor Palmer and Dr Düben to develop research strategies. The project will investigate the influence of reduced numerical precision in idealised models as well as more realistic setups in the OpenIFS model. The results will be presented at national and international meetings as well as published in peer reviewed publications and may lead to implementations in operational weather and climate models.

Applicants should have a doctorate, or be close to obtaining, in physics, mathematics, nonlinear dynamics or a related field, and ideally a strong numerical modelling background and a good understanding of atmosphere models and experience with high performance computing. The candidates should have the drive to perform novel research of international standing in a dynamic working environment.

Please direct informal enquiries about the role to Professor Tim Palmer (Tim.Palmer@physics.ox.ac.uk<mailto:Tim.Palmer@physics.ox.ac.uk>) or to Dr Peter Düben (Peter.Dueben@physics.ox.ac.uk<mailto:Peter.Dueben@physics.ox.ac.uk>).
