The International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling (IMPRS-ESM), located in Hamburg, Germany, offers fellowships to outstanding students interested in interdisciplinary climate research. Our doctoral candidates contribute to the understanding of the Earth system through the application, evaluation and development of a spectrum of Earth system models at different levels of complexity and at various spatial and temporal scales. Emphasizing the physical system, the School encompasses the broader field of Earth sciences, including economics and social sciences. The IMPRS-ESM strives to attract a diversity of talented women and men from all nationalities to research in the Earth system sciences.
The PhD program is open to applicants holding a Master's degree (with written thesis) in physics, geophysical sciences (incl. meteorology and oceanography), chemistry, ecology, mathematics, computer science, engineering, economics, or political science. Also students currently still working on their MSc thesis are encouraged to apply.
Please apply online through our website until September 15, 2016. The selection procedure includes an interview (probably in November 2016). Doctoral candidates receive financial support of about 1,500 Euros/month for a period of three years. There are no tuition fees but a semester fee is charged by the university. Funding will be available starting March 2017.

The Grantham Institute and Space and Atmospheric Physics Group are seeking a talented and highly qualified research associate to work on a 2-yr fixed-term research project supported by the Natural Environment Research Council. The project, in association with the University of Oxford Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics Group, will involve the analysis of observational datasets, and employ a range of climate models, to investigate radiative and dynamical mechanisms for the influence of stratospheric variability on the Earth's weather and climate. A particular focus will be on decadal-scale variability associated with the 11-year cycle in the Sun's irradiance.

The Horizon 2020 PRIMAVERA project is a major international research
programme to develop a new generation of advanced high-resolution global
climate models, capable of simulating and predicting regional climate with
unprecedented fidelity for the benefit of governments, business and society.
The post holder will become part of this international research team,
developing a process-based understanding of the impact of climate
variability and change on the energy sector.
It is anticipated that this post will include active engagement with key
stakeholders in the energy sector to elicit areas of user need and to
disseminate project results. A particular, but not necessarily exclusive,
focus is likely to be electricity systems at national and continental scale
in Europe.
You will have:
- Excellent quantitative scientific and analytical skills
- Demonstrated interest in climate science, particularly its impact on the
energy sector
- A PhD in a quantitative physical or mathematical science (or expect to
gain one shortly)
- Demonstrated computing skills (programming, use of complex scientific
software, handling large datasets)
- Strong team working and communication skills
- Ability to identify and engage with stakeholders in the energy sector.

Der Deutsche Wetterdienst (DWD) sucht in der Abteilung "Flugmeteorologie" im Rahmen des BMVI-Expertennetzwerkes am Dienstort Offenbach am Main zum nächstmöglichen Termin, befristet bis zum 31. Dezember 2019, eine/n
Wissenschaftliche/n Mitarbeiter/in

Mit dem BMVI-Expertennetzwerk wird unter Einbindung der Ressortforschungseinrichtungen des BMVI sowie seiner weiteren Fachbehörden ein innovations- und umsetzungsorientiertes Netzwerk aufgebaut. Im Themenfeld 2 "Verkehr und Infrastruktur umweltgerecht gestalten" wollen sich der Deutsche Wetterdienst zusammen mit der Deutschen Flugsicherung mit dem Thema "Optimierung der Flugplanung durch Bereitstellung meteorologischer Services im System Wide Information Management (SWIM)" einbringen.
Das Aufgabengebiet umfasst im Wesentlichen folgende Tätigkeiten:
Wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung des Projektes "Optimierung der Flugplanung durch Bereitstellung meteorologischer Services im System Wide Information Management (SWIM) innerhalb des BMVI-Expertennetzwerkes
o Überführung meteorologischer Beobachtungs- und Vorhersagedaten (METAR, SPECI, TAF, SIGMET) in das xml-basierte Wetterdatenaustauschmodell (IWXXM) der ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization)
o Einrichtung der Infrastruktur im Bereich der GeoWeb-Dienste durch Ertüchtigung des WebFeature-Services zur Abgabe von Vektordaten im SWIM-konformen xml-Format (IWXXM) und durch Ertüchtigung der WebCoverage-Services zur Abgabe von Rasterdaten im SWIM-konformen GRIB2-Format
o Kommunikation, Zusammenarbeit und Berichtswesen im BMVI-Expertennetzwerk sowie schnittstellenbezogene Kommunikation mit Projekten im Kontext von SESAR (Single European Sky)
Unerlässliche Anforderungen an die/den künftige/n DP-Inhaber/in sind:
· Erfolgreich abgeschlossenes Hochschulstudium (Universitätsdiplom oder Master), vorzugsweise der Informatik, Physik Meteorologie oder einer vergleichbaren Studienrichtung
· Sichere Kenntnisse der englischen Sprache in Wort und Schrift (mind. Level B2 CEFR)
· Sichere Kenntnisse der deutschen Sprache in Wort und Schrift (mind. Level C1 CEFR)
· Bereitschaft zur Durchführung von Dienstreisen im In- und Ausland
Darüber hinaus erwarten wir von Ihnen:
· Umfangreiche Kenntnisse und Erfahrungen in der Programmierung, insbesondere JAVA, C, C++ sowie Skriptsprachen (z.B. Shell, Perl , Python) unter UNIX/LINUX
· Erfahrungen im Umgang mit Datenbanken und Datenbank-Management-Systemen mit Erweiterung zur georeferenzierten Speicherung geografischer Informationen (z.B. Oracle Spatial and Graph)
· Umfangreiche Kenntnisse zu Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) konformen WebServices und GML (Geography Markup Language)
· Kenntnisse des Umgangs mit Entwicklungsumgebungen zur Programmierung (z.B. Eclipse) und Versionsmanagement (z.B. Perforce)
· Kenntnisse über Georeferenzierte Rasterdatenbanken, Service Orientated Architecture (SOA) sowie zur Datenmodellierung
· Kenntnisse über meteorologische Datenarten, wie z.B. METAR, TAF, SIGMET, Datenformate und Datenaustauschmodelle (Rasterdaten in GRIB2, Vektordaten in xml / IWXXM (Wetterdatenaustauschmodell der ICAO) sowie
· Kreativität und Innovationsvermögen
· Umgang mit Stress- und Konfliktsituationen
· Sicheres mündliches und schriftliches Ausdrucksvermögen
· Analytisches und ergebnisorientiertes Denken u. Handeln
· Organisations- und Planungsvermögen (auch Selbstorganisation)

Kenntnisse in der Flugmeteorologie und/oder Flugverkehrsmanagement sind von Vorteil.
Bezahlung:
Der Dienstposten ist nach Entgeltgruppe 13, Teil 1 der Anlage 1 zum TV-EntgO-Bund bewertet. Die Zuordnung zu den Stufen erfolgt unter Berücksichtigung der persönlichen einschlägigen Erfahrungen.
