The call is open, until 15 November, for a short-term (6-month) postdoctoral
fellowship at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Sciences (CESAM),
Department of Physics, University of Aveiro, Portugal.

Field: Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Meteorology and Climate

Project title: Extreme precipitation events and surface mass balance in
Antarctica: investigating the role of atmospheric rivers

Project description: Antarctica has the potential to contribute more
than a meter of sea-level rise by 2100 in response to the occurring
global climate warming. At the same time intense precipitation events
over specific regions of Antarctica can determine the sign of the total
mass balance change of the entire ice sheet. Links have been established
between extreme precipitation events in East Antarctica with atmospheric
rivers - narrow and long-band features of intense moisture transport
from lower latitudes. This project aims to extend the analysis to the
entire ice sheet, and will use unique measurements to be gathered during
the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition next austral summer, in order
to explore the role of atmospheric rivers in precipitation over the
Antarctic ice sheet and the Southern Ocean.

The specific objectives of this postdoctoral fellowship are:

- Perform high-resolution regional climate model simulations (using the
Polar version of the WRF-ARW model) over several Antarctic/Southern
ocean domains for specific extreme precipitation cases
- Use the precipitation and other meteorological data gathered during
the ACE expedition and available satellite products for model evaluation
- Investigate mechanisms behind extreme precipitation events
(association with atmospheric rivers, warm conveyor belts, tropical
moisture exports, other synoptic and mesoscale dynamic phenomena, as
well as exploring oceanic influences on the moisture amounts and
transports) using the regional climate model simulations, reanalysis
data, and available measurements

Admission requirements:
- PhD in the area of Atmospheric and Earth Sciences or a related field.
- Work experience in numerical simulations with regional climate models
and/or weather forecasting models, including model parameterisation
modification
- Work experience in processing large data sets including output from
numerical models, reanalysis products and satellite data
- Interest and experience in polar climate research preferably
demonstrated with relevant publications
- Computer skills with desired proficiency in FORTRAN, netcdf
processing, and data analysis software (NCL, matlab, R..)

Workplace: The work will be done at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Sciences (CESAM), Department of Physics, University of Aveiro, Portugal, under the supervision of the CESAM researcher
Dr Irina Gorodetskaya and co-supervised by Prof Alfredo Rocha.

Collaborations: Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD (USA); EPFL (Switzerland), KUL (Belgium), University of Lisboa (Portugal)

Length of contract: The grant duration is 6 months, starting on 1 December 2016.

Salary: The amount of the grant corresponds to €1495 per month, according to FCT values for Portugal
(http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en)

Post-doctoral research position on on Aerosol, Cloud & Radiation Interactions

We are looking for a Postdoctoral researcher in the dynamic Climate Processes Group<https://www2.physics.ox.ac.uk/research/climate-processes> within the sub-Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics at the University of Oxford. The post is available immediately for a fixed-term period of 24 months.

This position is part of the CLouds and Aerosol Radiative Impacts and Forcing (CLARIFY) project focusing on aerosol-cloud interactions over the South-East Atlantic. CLARIFY is a major consortium programme consisting of five UK universities (Exeter, Oxford, Leeds, Manchester and Reading) with project partners from the UK Met Office, the US NASA ORACLES (ObseRvations of Aerosols above CLouds and their interactions) as well as the US ARM LASIC: Layered Atlantic Smoke Interactions with Clouds project. The CLARIFY field campaign with a deployment of the FAAM (www.faam.ac.uk<http://www.faam.ac.uk>) research aircraft will take place in August/September 2017.

The focus of the postholder in this position will be on the representation of aerosol-cloud interactions in the global climate model configuration of the UK MetOffice Unified Model, using multiple observations from the CLARIFY/ORACLES/LASIC campaigns, satellite remote sensing as well as high-resolution modelling as benchmarks. The successful applicant will work closely with the UK MetOffice and is expected to develop innovative evaluation strategies. The results should be presented at national and international meetings as well as published in high-impact publications. The postholder will have the opportunity to teach.

Applicants should have (or be close to obtaining) a doctorate in atmospheric physics or a related field and a strong background in clouds/aerosols. Strong computing skills, including the knowledge of UNIX/Linux, Python, html, or other high-level languages are essential. Experience with global climate models is preferred but not required.

Please direct enquiries to Philip Stier (Philip.stier@physics.ox.ac.uk<mailto:Philip.stier@physics.ox.ac.uk>).

You will be required to upload a statement of research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.

Only electronic applications received before 12.00 midday on 15 December 2016 through the Oxford University recruitment webpage<http://www.recruit.ox.ac.uk/pls/hrisliverecruit/erq_jobspec_version_4.jobspec?p_id=126257> can be considered.

The use of satellite surface data on improving source identification and modelling of crop diseases

The Met Office is part of a collaborative effort to develop a forecasting capability for wheat rust (a fungal disease attacking wheat crops), using the NAME atmospheric dispersion model. Airborne transmission, short reproduction cycles of the fungus and limited time windows for fungicide treatment can lead to large scale epidemics within only a few weeks. Because of the potential for rapid spread and also considerable yield losses, wheat rusts are one of the most devastating plant diseases. The source locations for the fungus are a vital element in forecasting the spread of the infection and are typically provided by local ground surveys. Suitable satellite observations will be analysed to assess the health of green vegetation and potentially provide a more wide-spread and timely indication of the extent of wheat rust fungus infection and thus enable improved forecasts.
The project offers a unique opportunity to the successful candidate to be exposed to and obtain experience at the forefront of R&D in the Met Office by combining satellite observations and dispersion modelling.
