Could you please advertise the following Post-doc position

Project title: Improving Drought and Flood Early Warning, Forecasting and Mitigation using real-time hydroclimatic indicators (IMDROFLOOD <http://imdroflood.csic.es/> ), an European funded project.

Working plan: The main purpose of this fellowship is to assist the team achieving the deliverables defined in the IMDROFLOOD project. The candidate will work extensively with probabilistic meteorological forecasts from the ECMWF in order to develop and validate probabilistic short and medium-term operative meteorological forecast, focused on intense Cyclone events and Atmospheric Rivers affecting Europe often associated with the most extreme precipitation events. In addition, the candidate will assess the usefulness of different drought indices when applied to sectorial impacts at a river basin scale. Finally the candidate will interact with stakeholders and end-users for building impact prediction tools for decision making.

Admission requirements:

- Ph.D in Atmospheric Sciences, with solid knowledge in Climate Dynamics and impacts of large scale circulation in climate at the regional scale;

- It is considered essential good programing skills in languages such as MATLAB (or IDL or Python) and/or Fortran;

- Preference will be given to candidates that demonstrate a background handling extreme precipitation events (e.g. Droughts and/or floods);

- It is an advantage a good knowledge in handling large datasets such as Reanalysis datasets (e.g. ERA-Interim, NCEP/NCAR), as well as, GCM and RCM outputs;

Workplace: The work will be done at the Instituto Dom Luiz, Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon Portugal, under the supervision of the under the scientific supervision of Dr. Ricardo M. Trigo <https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=qAW5awsAAAAJ&hl=en> .

Length of contract: This position is initially opened for 6 months and will begin on January 2017. The fellowship contract may be renewed to more 18 months.

Salary: The amount of the grant corresponds to €1495 per month (net), according to FCT values for Portugal ( <https://mailadfs.ua.pt/owa/redir.aspx?C=d1I6XUmmUEaKsWMfnN54Jo_4U6S5-tMIoOf4Rkh_tIcYUXOKHNwo7LpBH0VQWihN1RVDsLJr9bA.&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.fct.pt%2fapoios%2fbolsas%2fvalores.phtml.en> http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en).

Within the DFG project "AWiCiT (Arctic Winter Cirrus Thinning)", we are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate who is interested in investigating ice formation processes in cirrus clouds.

Within this project, the PhD candidate will mainly conduct experiments at the AIDA (Aerosol Interactions and Dynamics in the Atmosphere) cloud simulation chamber investigating ice formation processes. She/he will systematically investigate the freezing properties of aerosol mixtures with different ice nucleation properties (e.g. different desert dusts or artificial meteoric dust). The results will also be used to improve the representation of cirrus clouds in climate models, which will be a major pre-requisite for testing hypotheses regarding different climate engineering approaches in the future.
We offer an exciting project with a strong focus on experimental work, the AIDA chamber being the largest cloud simulation facility in Europe. The candidate will also have the opportunity to present her/his work at (international) workshops and conferences.

We are looking for a candidate with a background in (environmental) physics or meteorology, high motivation to work in a great lab environment and very good analytical skills. Ideally, the candidate would have experience in MATLAB or else. Fluency in English is highly desirable.
This thesis project will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Thomas Leisner and Dr. Isabelle Steinke (see below for contact details). Applications for this position should include a cover letter, your CV and transcripts of your most recent grades.
We are looking forward to your application and are happy to answer any enquiries regarding this thesis project.

Land-Atmosphere Earth System Modeling at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY)
The postdoctoral fellowship focuses on fundamental questions regarding the interaction between the biogeochemistry of the nitrogen cycle and impacts on climate and air-quality. It addresses how the nitrogen cycle will change in the future as the climate changes and emissions change. The successful candidate will work on a collaborative, interdisciplinary project relevant for predicting human impacts on biogeochemistry and climate. The research involves simulating various aspects of the nitrogen cycle and its climate impacts within an Earth System model. The project is collaborative between the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department, the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering and the Crop and Soil Sciences Department at Cornell University with strong collaborative connections to the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology department. The successful applicant will demonstrate experience with numerical modeling and will have a record of publications in peer-reviewed literature. The successful applicant will hold a Ph.D. in atmospheric science, engineering, environmental biology, ecology or a related field. Experience with large model simulations is highly desirable, as well as familiarity with the analysis of large data sets. Applicants should send an email directly to pgh25@cornell.edu<mailto:pgh25@cornell.edu>. Applications will be processed until position is filled. Cornell University is an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and we strongly encourage applications from women and minorities.

Coarse mode aerosol biogeochemistry at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY)
The postdoctoral position will focus on characterizing the distribution and variability of coarse mode aerosols from observations and models, especially focused on anthropogenic dust, primary biogenic particles and coarse mode combustion sources. While substantial previous work has characterized the fine mode, especially for direct radiative forcing and aerosol-cloud interactions, the coarse mode is poorly understood. However, for some biogeochemistry questions (e.g. involving Fe, P, Ca), the coarse mode is more important than the fine mode. The successful candidate will be able to synthesize model and observational data to better understand the mean distribution, variability, size distribution and chemical characterization of coarse mode aerosols globally. The successful applicant will demonstrate experience with numerical modeling and/or observational datasets and will have a record of publications in peer-reviewed literature. They should hold a Ph.D. in atmospheric science, engineering or a related field. Applicants should send an email directly to mahowald@cornell.edu<mailto:pgh25@cornell.edu>. Applications will be processed until position is filled. Cornell University is an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and we strongly encourage applications from women and minorities.
