Polish national weather service, IMGW-PIB is seeking for an employee/PhD
student to work on atmospheric turbulence and surface fluxes on
differential manifolds, in the context of high resolution numerical
weather prediction for mountainous regions. The project is realized in
tight cooperation with MeteoSwiss and Deutscher Wetterdienst and the
COSMO Consortium for Small-scale Modeling, aiming at operationalization
of the new COSMO-EULAG dynamical core.

This is an unique position at the forefront of the high-resolution
weather prediction in the excellent scientific environment of COSMO
Consortium, with the salary(payroll) up to 1000 EUR net of tax.
Ambitious candidates with interest in cross-disciplinary research
involving physics, numerical mathematics and scientific HPC programming
are encouraged to apply.

Please refer for the further details to the PDF attached.

Best Regards,

Zbigniew Piotrowski

We have a fixed-term, 24-month opportunity to work on sub-seasonal predictability at the University of Reading. The research scientist will examine sub-seasonal predictability in the North Atlantic sector, working closely with an industrial sponsor. The post-holder will be expected to work with a set of hindcast data available from the S2S project to meet the following objectives:

- Developing an extendable statistical methodology for diagnosing and assessing skill, uncertainty and bias under the main Euro-Atlantic weather regimes for variables and regions of interest to the sponsor
- Assessing how regimes and their transitions affect predictability by using an EOF phase index (similar to the MJO RMM index)
- Performing (if thought beneficial and depending on the results from the main weather regimes) a more tailored regime analysis using the best available method (e.g. Self Organising Maps)
- Assessing if the predictive skill is conditional on global/remote drivers such as the MJO, ENSO, QBO, anomalous stratospheric events, PDO, SST patterns and surface forcings such as sea ice, snow and soil moisture anomalies
- Determining if gains in skill and predictability are model dependent

Opportunity for Early Stage Researchers
Researcher Links Workshop: Communication, interpretation and use of climate information for development
Coordinators: Prof Suraje Dessai, SRI, University of Leeds & Prof Coleen Vogel, University of Witwatersrand.
Mentors: Dr Joe Daron (Met Office, UK), Dr Katharine Vincent (Kulima Integrated Development Solutions, South Africa), Dr Admire Nyamwanza (Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa), and Dr Rachel James (University of Oxford, UK)
Discipline: Climate and environmental sciences, social science and related disciplines
Dates and venue: 6-8th March 2017, Cape Town, South Africa
The programme, 'British Council Researcher Links' provides opportunities for early career researchers from the UK and internationally to interact, learn from each other and explore opportunities for building long-lasting research collaborations. As part of this programme, we are now recruiting early career researchers to participate in the above workshop.
Workshop Theme
Appropriate communication, interpretation and use of climate information are critical in addressing the challenges that climate variability and change pose to the sustainable development of society. This interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary workshop will focus on contemporary issues in climate change adaptation and the development of climate services in three key sectors: water resources, food security and agriculture. These have been identified as priority sectors in the Global Framework on Climate Services (GFCS) and are central to socio-economic development and social welfare in South Africa and the UK. With uncertainties in future climate projections for South Africa and the UK there is an urgency to improve both scientific understanding and provision of timely climate information to guide development decisions over the next 10 to 15 years.
Effective and equitable long-term solutions require robust scientific knowledge from inter- and trans-disciplinary collaborations drawing on experiences across countries, climates and cultures. The workshop extends beyond climate science to enable sharing of knowledge and methods that span natural, social and applied sciences. Topics that will be addressed at the workshop include:

* Effective and efficient development and communication of climate information for use in society

* Co-development of climate services - involving producers, providers and users

* The use of climate information to enhance economic development and social welfare.
The workshop follows the Fifth International Conference on Climate Services (ICCS5) in Cape Town (28th Feb - 2nd Mar 2017). The outcomes of the ICCS5 conference will to feed into the workshop, enabling the workshop to build on issues identified by attending stakeholders.
Application and Deadline
Deadline for applications is 18th December 2016. Further information, including the full call for participants and details on how to apply, can be found on the workshop website: http://climate.leeds.ac.uk/opportunities/workshop-communication-interpretation-and-use-of-climate-information-for-development/
