Manchester Metropolitan University can trace its roots back to 1824 and we have enjoyed a long and
successful past and we are a Top 3% global University. We are one of the UK's most popular universities, in
the heart of a global city that is vibrant, visionary and ambitious. These are values that we also share.
We offer an outstanding environment that will drive achievement, with a transformed estate, excellent
infrastructure, and research activity, and impact that has been recognised as world-class across the breadth
of our University.
The University attracts students from all over the UK and is a popular choice for students from the North West
region who make up over 60 per cent of our student body. We welcome more than 2,700 international
students from 118 countries, and the Greater Manchester area is home to more international students than
any other UK region, outside London.
We offer a truly multicultural experience to students who decide to study with us. 89 per cent of our
graduates go straight into work or further study within six months of graduation. The majority, more than 70
per cent, remain in the North West and contribute to the economic success and reputation of the region.
We recently finalised our move from seven campuses to two with the completion of our Birley Building. A total
of £350 million has been invested since 2006, to give us an outstanding campus for teaching, learning and
research, and support our aim to be the University for World-Class Professionals.
The REF2014 outcome for MMU was excellent. In excess of a third of our research was rated either world
leading or internationally excellent and we demonstrated world-class outcomes in Healthcare Science,
Environmental Science, Computer Science, Business and Management, Social Work and Social Policy,
Sociology, Education, English Language and Literature, Philosophy, Art and Design and the Contemporary
Arts and Performance.

Role
We are seeking to appoint a leading researcher with interests and successful experience in any area of
environmental research, though congruence with existing strengths in the Faculty will be an advantage.

Current research groups are listed on the website though these are being reviewed and will develop.
We will look to the new Director / Head to lead on these developments. The person appointed will have an
internationally excellent publication record in a relevant field, a significant track record of generating external
grant income and be enthusiastic and focused on turning our research ambitions into reality. S/he will be able
to demonstrate significant academic leadership, excellent teaching and academic citizenship.
We are looking for an excellent communicator who will be able to interact and work effectively with a range of
stakeholders including external organisations and staff at all levels.
The successful applicant will lead research activity in the environmental research centre and be a leading
researcher in their field.
