of Rhode Island is seeking applications for a tenure-track Associate or Full Professor to
serve as Director of the Coastal Resources Center (CRC, http://www.crc.uri.edu <http://www.crc.uri.edu/> <http://www.crc.uri.edu/ <http://www.crc.uri.edu/>>). This
faculty position will be an academic year appointment with an expected start date of
September, 2017.
Position Description
Challenges facing coastal communities and ecosystems are increasing rapidly as
pressures resulting from human activities continue to build (e.g. sea level rise,
unsustainable fishing practices, coastal erosion, seawater inundation). Therefore, GSO is
looking to grow our leadership in the use of science to inform coastal and marine
development, policy, and management. We seek a dynamic scholar that will lead the
CRC in efforts to provide sustainable solutions. We are looking for a bold visionary with
a passion for coastal communities and ecosystems and respect for the role that science
plays in informing management decisions. The successful candidate will be expected to
initiate, design, and obtain funding for programs that support the CRC mission. The
director will develop a long-term vision for CRC and enhance its position as a national
and international leader. In addition, the director will be responsible for the strategic
planning of CRC personnel and budget (currently ~$8 â€" 10M per year). The successful
candidate will also be expected to contribute to GSO’s academic mission through
teaching courses, conducting research and advising graduate students.

Coastal Resources Center
Founded in 1971, the CRC’s mission is to promote coastal stewardship worldwide using
the best available science and management practices for the long-term economic, social
and environmental well-being of the planet. CRC is an innovator, leader, and champion
for the integration of human and socio-economic aspects into coastal and marine issues
such as climate change, fisheries and aquaculture, coastal and ocean planning, and marine
conservation. CRC has over 45 years of experience in the design and delivery of
coastal/marine ecosystem governance initiatives including more than 20 major (multiyear,
multi-million dollar) projects and hundreds of related initiatives in over 20 countries
in Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States â€" totaling over $150
million. For example, CRC partnered with the State of Rhode Island to create the Rhode
Island Ocean Special Area Management Plan, which is resulting in 17,000 households
receiving clean energy from the country’s first offshore windfarm. CRC is also helping
the countries of Ghana, Malawi, The Gambia, and Senegal redefine their fisheries laws
and policies and suggest new ways forward by providing technical training and using an
issues-driven approach to decentralized fisheries management. CRC is an internationally
recognized leader in individual and organizational capacity development and has over the
years strengthened the capacity of thousands of individuals from over 50 countries. CRC
serves as the outreach and extension arm of the Rhode Island Sea Grant.

Postdoctoral Position in Ecosystem Modelling (INRA Nancy, France)
The ERANET Project FOCUSSERA studies the interactions between interactive effects of drought and tree population density on the resistance and resilience of tree growth, as well as the ecophysiological mechanisms contributing to the drought response of Norway spruce (Picea abies) and silver fir (Abies alba). It combines a large dataset from long-term experimental management stands in Germany, France and Switzerland with a mechanistic ecosystem model and a forest succession model including forest management and ecosystem services, leading to an economic risk-assessment at different spatial and temporal scales.
The postdoc will provide mortality rates for the risk-assessment model ForClim (Rasche et al. 2011) by mechanistic modelling of tree mortality with the ecosystem model MuSICA (Ogée et al. 2003) under different forest management strategies and climate change scenarios. MuSICA (Ogée et al. 2003) is among the most advanced multi-layer soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer (SVAT) models, based on ecophysiological process representations and includes, among others, species competition for a limited number of resources such as light and water. The postdoc will enhance the formulations of carbohydrate stores in MuSICA, including their isotopic compositions, as well as develop further the hydraulic formulations leading ultimately to hydraulic failure during drought.
FOCUSSERA combines researchers from the NFZ.forestnet that connects six research institutions from Zurich (Switzerland), Freiburg (Germany) and Nancy (France). The postdoc will work with the partner institutions, forming the link between the data-centred work packages and the economic risk-assessment tool. S/he will also work closely with the main developer of the ecosystem model in Bordeaux (J Ogée). MuSICA is written in Fortran. Strong programming skills are required.
The position is based at INRA Nancy (France) in the Joint Research Unit (UMR 1137) of Forest Ecology and Ecophysiology (EEF). It is for a duration of three years, starting as soon as possible. Salary level will correspond to the "Chargé de Recherches, 1ère classe" level.
