The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences ? Department of
Landscape Architecture is offering a position for a Research assistant
in Landscape planning directed towards modeling of spatial processes.
We seek a highly motivated research assistant to work with systems
design and programming, and to some extent also modeling, of spatial
processes in a GIS environment. The research assistant will work in the
group lead by Professor Kristina Blennow. This group is undertaking work
to improve knowledge on the interaction between human beings and their
environment, and to support planning and decision-making under uncertain
and changing conditions, in particular with respect to adaptation to
climate change. This environment provides opportunities for
collaboration with a large number of groups with complementing
qualifications within landscape planning, geography, philosophy, and
forestry. The research assistant will work as modeling consultant
towards PhD students and researchers at 10% of the working time.
The successful candidate will have experience in systems design and
programming of spatial process models. Experience and skill of
implementation in a GIS environment is essential and mastering of
several programming languages is desirable, as is training in
climatology, in particular local scale climatology. The PhD grade is
desirable.
The position will be based at the Alnarp Campus in southern Sweden. The
working environment is international and the working language is
English. Alnarp is in the heart of the dynamic ?resund region that
offers many cultural activities, an attractive natural environment and a
high general quality of life. Alnarp is adjacent to Malm? and Lund and
is connected by a bridge to Copenhagen.
SLU is an international university, world class in life and
environmental sciences. We are ranked among the Top 100 of ca 5,000
European universities. We have a strong research focus, but we also
offer some of Sweden?s most in-demand educations; veterinarian,
forester, and landscape architect.
Closing date: 8 August 2011
Reference: SLU ua 1797/2011
Form of employment: Permanent, at least 50 %
Starting date: By agreement

Postdoctoral Position in Terrestrial Paleoenvironment and Biogeochemistry.
A postdoctoral position is available to join a growing research group
focused on interactions between biogeochemistry, paleoclimates, and
climate change. The primary responsibility associated with this position
is to conduct independent research on the biogeochemical consequences of
Holocene climate change at the borders between grassland and forested
ecosystems in Kansas and central North America. The minimum
qualification is a doctoral degree in a relevant ecological, Earth, or
environmental science. The ideal candidate would have a strong
familiarity with Quaternary paleoecological data, skills in laboratory
analysis of sediment, knowledge of nutrient cycling (particularly
nitrogen), the implications of environmental change on ecosystem
services, and experience with multivariate statistical methods.
Experience with GIS, ecosystem models, and/or elemental analysis is also
desirable. Specific duties include acquisition and analysis of
paleoenvironmental data, presentation of research findings at
professional meetings, collaboration with faculty, preparation of
manuscripts, and mentoring and collaboration with diverse undergraduate
and graduate students. This position will be based at the Department of
Geography at Kansas State University.
The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal. Salary is
commensurate with experience and qualifications; benefits are included.
To apply, applicants should send a CV, a cover letter including future
research and career goals, and the names and contact information for
three professional references as a single pdf to Dr. Kendra McLauchlan (
<mclauch@ksu.edu> ) with the subject line ?postdoctoral position .?
Review of applications will begin July 1, 2011 and continue until the

We have a vacancy for a post doctoral researcher in Earth observation.
This research focuses on the improvement of the Met Office JULES
land-surface model. JULES is written in Fortran 90, and calculates the
fluxes of carbon, water and energy from the land to the atmosphere. The
objective of the work is to improve the integration between the JULES
model and satellite data. This will involve improving the calculation of
absorption and scattering of solar radiation by the land surface
vegetation in JULES.
The job requires a PhD in Earth Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences,
Geophysics, Physics, Computer Science, Geography or a related field. The
candidate must have very good numerical skills and should be familiar
with optimization and inversion techniques, and statistical analysis. It
is essential that the candidate is proficient in at least 1 computer
language, preferably Fortran 90 or C or C++.
The position is for just under 2 years, and to start as soon as
possible. Closing Date: for applications: 14 July 2011
