Development of European Extreme Weather Climatologies
Department of Space and Climate Physics (MSSL)
University College London, UK.
Applicants are invited for a NERC-funded PhD Research Studentship at
the Mullard Space Science Laboratory located near Guildford, Surrey, UK.
MSSL is a Department of University College London (UCL) with a strong
track record of research into weather extremes and of commercialising
such research. The studentship is available immediately, and must start
by September/October 2011.
The project will examine the following weather extremes: extreme rainfall,
temperature extremes (hot and cold), and heatwave and freeze incidence.
For these extremes the project will derive exceedance probability
distributions and trends for various locations and levels of spatial resolution
across Europe using an untapped state-of-the-art Met Office European
observational database. The research will provide scientific excellence,
valuable input to the next International Panel on Climate Change report
and, through its derived products, help businesses further understand
their risk from extreme weather.
Applicants must have a first class or 2.1 undergraduate degree in a
relevant physical, mathematical or computational subject. Applicants
must be a UK citizen or an EU national who has been resident in the UK
for the previous three years. Applicants should possess good analytical
and research skills, good IT skills, good written and verbal communication
skills, and be committed to computational rigour and to high quality
research.
Full particulars about the research studentship may be accessed at:

Teaching position at the Goethe University in Frankfurt
We are seeking somebody with a strong background in theoretical
meteorology or physics (and mathematics) who is to contribute to the
mathematics courses (in German) within the meteorology program of the
university. The idea is to provide high-level courses with less focus on
pure, and more on applied mathematics. Own research is welcome and
encouraged. Vacancy notice attached.
Best regards,
Ulrich Achatz

Tenure-track professorship in the field of climate modelling offered at the
UGTO (University of Guanajuato, central Mexico), closing July 25.
Guanajuato is a very safe & friendly community and university town, see
<http://www.astro.ugto.mx/~kps/GTOimages.html> for photographs.
The astronomy department, which has a multinational faculty of 12 professors
from 6 nations, is hosting a meteorologic service for central mexico. It runs a
network of automatic weather stations
and a forecast computer model, both managed by two engineers (see
<www.ccaug.ugto.mx, and www.astro.ugto.mx>).
With this tenure-track position in the field of climate modelling, and more
positions to follow in future years, the University of Guanajuato (UGTO) wants
to establish a research centre
to investigate in detail climate change and its consequenses
for mexico. The pronounced central mexican topography, which is acting
as a barrier between the pacific and the atlantic weather systems,
requires global models with high resolution asigned to Mexico
- an interesting task still waiting to be done. In addition, some mild
teaching load is expected in very basic physics courses for
the undergraduate students of the science division in chemistry,
math and biology, or in form of a specialised course in atmospheric
science and computer modelling (in english, as choices for the graduate
programmes of astrophyscis, chemistry and math), until in a few years a course
programme for atmospheric sciences will be established.
The suitable candidate will ideally have some time of post-doc
research experience in the field of climate modelling, some teaching
experience, and an appetite to found and foster a new research group.
External funding from different federal sources (technology, ecology and
science, offered by Conacyt), as well as local governmental
funding is available for propsals in the area of climate research,
to finance e.g. a parallel computing facility. Tenure is available already
after 2 years, and the initial salary can be nearly doubled
by additional, result-dependent components.
The original job offer (in spanish) can be found on the web-page of the
UGTO, <www.ugto.mx>, going to "profesores" and there to "convocatorias".
The application may be in english (prefered) or spanish and should include the
typical requirements: CV with publication list and information
on past teaching experience, photocopy of the PhD certificate, a research plan
for the next 2 years, 2 letters of recommendation, and contact details
(telephone and email). Interviews can be held via telephone, in english.
Deadline for applications is July 25, 2011. - More information is
available from:
