RMS is a leader in the development and application of complex statistical and numerical modelling methods for the quantification of natural hazard risk. RMS? risk models are the most detailed and comprehensive models of natural catastrophes produced anywhere in the world. Our clients include several hundred insurance and reinsurance companies as well as brokers, banks, hedge funds, regional and local governments, and multilateral agencies.
RMS London?s model development group, a team of more thirty scientists, build mathematical models to estimate the possible damage from tropical storms, extra-tropical storms, thunderstorms, storm-surges and fluvial floods. The team includes experts across a broad range of scientific and geographical disciplines including hydrologists, earth scientists, GIS experts, meteorologists and statisticians.
RMS is offering a paid internship for 3 months starting in September 2011. The successful candidate will work in the exposure team as part of the Model Development group based in London. The ideal candidate would (a) A PHD preferred in: Engineering, Geography, Economics, Statistics , or any scientific discipline (b) Be proficient in data analysis and data manipulation software tools (Excel, Access and SQL Server) (c) Knowledge of GIS software applications (d) Knowledge of VBA, R, GRASS, QGIS, PostgreSQL, Linux (e) able to demonstrate the ability to take on multiple projects (f) Be equally comfortable working independently and in a team environment (g) Be comfortable in a fast-paced academic environment, and able to quickly learn RMS' core business and be able to see the "big picture."
