A PhD studentship is available in the Department of Meteorology at
University of Reading, UK.

Title: Predictability of the opening of Arctic sea routes

Supervisors: Dr. Ed Hawkins, Prof. Keith Haines, Dr. Dan Hodson

Start date: From 1st October 2011

A PhD project studentship is available to examine the predictability of
the opening of the Arctic sea routes - an important aspect of Arctic
climate which is of particular importance to industry and decision
makers. Arctic sea routes are important to such stakeholders for several
reasons: (i) passage of ships on shorter routes between the Atlantic and
Pacific, (ii) access to reserves of minerals, oil etc., and (iii) the
potential for conflict over access to, and ownership of, the sea routes.

Although the main focus of the studentship will be on examining the
potential for predictions of the opening of Arctic sea routes on
seasonal to inter-annual timescales, it will be essential to consider
longer term climate projections as well. This project will form part of
a larger Arctic research programme funded by NERC.

HAMTEC Consulting a provider of quality consultants to the aerospace
industry.

We are currently seeking a university degree in meteorology, atmospheric
physics, or equivalent

With three years of experience in the field of remote sounding

Location: Darmstadt, Germany

Start Date: As soon as Feasible

Closing date: 2 September 2011

TASKS:

Engineering support is sought primarily to support the ongoing EPS System
calibration and validation. This support will be focussed on calibrating and
validating the EPS Product Processing Facilities (PPF) and subsequently
contribute to its improvement and extension, in particular for Day-2
products. This demands expertise in verification and validation, test data
production, and generation of prototype processors, mainly in the domain of
complex remote-sensing satellites product processors. It also requires
profound knowledge of the IASI instrument and its data processing.

It is expected that the tasks of the Consultant will typically include:

* Contribution to the validation of the IASI L2 Product Processing
Facility,
* Prototype coding of algorithms and tests procedures,
* Generation of test data,
* Support the verification of algorithms implementation in the
operational chain
* Analysis of validation activities and respective results;
* Conduct and support analyses of performance, timeliness, and
accuracy aspects, including the contribution to system-level budgets;
* Assessment, validation, and improvement of the IASI prototype
processors;
* Contribution to the development of prototypes for IASI day-2
products generation,
* Contribution to the definition and follow-up of further IASI
studies;
* Contribution to Calibration and Validation;
* Contribution to the Calibration and Validation Plan at system level
for the aspects addressed above;
* Participation in formal reviews at System, Operations and Ground
Segment level;

In an evolving way over time the consultant will provide in addition support
to the algorithm definition and eventual prototype development of future IR
sounding instruments, as foreseen for the Post-EPS Programme. This task will
evolve as the Post-EPS specification will mature in the coming years

Qualifications and Experience

. A university degree in meteorology, atmospheric physics, or
equivalent

. Three years of experience in the field of remote sounding

Essential Skills

. Development of complex product processors;

. Experience in the area of atmospheric remote sensing, including
handling and processing of remotely sensed data;

. Knowledge and Experience in the retrieval of atmospheric parameters
from infrared sounding instruments;

. Testing and verification of complex data processing systems;

. Very good skills in a higher programming language, such as Fortran,
C/C++, Java (existing product processors are written in Fortran 95 and
C/C++).

. Very good scientific and technical skills in data analysis and
presentation, with adequate data analysis tools.

. The Consultant shall be familiar with satellite instruments for
Earth observation.

. The Consultant shall have good interpersonal skills. He/she shall
have the ability to write concise and comprehensive scientific/technical
reports
