The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), a multidisciplinary center
for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany, invites
applications for the

Klaus Hasselmann Postdoctoral Fellowship (m/f; SAS2011-20)

The Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology is pleased to announce postdoctoral
re-search opportunities through its recently founded Klaus Hasselmann
Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. Klaus Hasselmann Fellows receive up to three
years of sup-port to conduct independent research in one of the departments
of MPI-M. In addi-tion to the salary the fellowship provides each fellow with
a modest budget to use at their discretion, support for relocation expenses,
as well as full access to the breadth of human, numerical, observational, and
computational resources available at one of the world's premier laboratories
for climate research.

Each year one fellowship will be awarded in one of three general areas of
Earth sys-tem modelling: land-surface & terrestrial biosphere interactions;
ocean science; at-mospheric science. The 2012 Fellowship will be awarded in
the general area of land-surface & terrestrial biosphere interactions and
will be hosted by the Depart-ment "The Land in the Earth System" directed by
Professor Martin Claussen (for fur-ther information:
martin.claussen(at)zmaw.de).

Klaus Hasselmann Fellows are expected to pursue independent research and will
be selected on the strength of their scholarship. Candidates from diverse
scientific backgrounds, with an interest in Earth system science, are
encouraged to apply. Special consideration will be given to those interested
in applying techniques from different disciplines to the application,
analysis, evaluation, and/or development of Earth system models. Qualified
scientists who have received their PhD within five years of the application
deadline are encouraged to apply.

The position is offered for 3 years. Payment will be in accordance with
German pub-lic service positions (TV?D E14), including extensive social
security plans. The con-ditions of employment, including upgrades and
duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of
Sciences and those of the German civil ser-vice. The Max Planck Institute for
Meteorology seeks to increase the number of fe-male scientist and encourages
them to apply. Handicapped persons with compara-ble qualifications receive
preferential status.

Applications (including a cover letter with a brief (2 pages or less)
statement of research interests, curriculum vitae, copies of scientific
degrees, and the names and contact information of three references) should
reach us before 30th of September 2011. In addition applicants should arrange
for three letters of recommendation to be sent directly by referees to the
same address. Applications should be sent via E-Mail to jobs@vw.mpimet.mpg.de
(max. 2 MB pdf- attachment only) or by post to:

centre for
climate research located in Hamburg, Germany. It has an internationally
recog-nized reputation in climate modelling. Within the project MiKlip
(Mittelfristige Kli-maprognosen) by the German Federal Ministry of Education
and Research (BMBF) we are looking for a

Scientist/PostDoc (m/f) - SAS2011-19 -

with a strong background in climate modelling and statistical methods. Within
the department "The Ocean in the Earth System" and in close collaboration
with the UK MetOffice the successful applicant will be part of a team working
on the evaluation of decadal prediction systems. His/her initial task will be
to analyse ex-isting and define new experiments for multi-year drought
predictions.

A Ph.D. in applied mathematics, meteorology, oceanography, physics or a
related area is required for this position. Excellent skill in programming
(Fortran and C) and statistical post-processing languages (R), and an ability
and desire to work as part of a team are essential. Experience in the
assessment of droughts and ex-treme-value theory are an advantage.

The position is initially offered for three years starting on 01 November
2011, with the possibility of one year`s extension. Payment will be in
accordance with Ger-man public service positions (TVoeD E13), including
extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including

*POST-DOCTORATE POSITION ON NUMERICAL MODELING OF CLIMATE CHANGE
*
Funding Agency FAPESP, Project n? 2008/58161-1
Title of the project:* Assessment of Impacts and Vulnerability to Climate
Change in
Brazil and Strategies for Adaptation Options*
Principal Investigator: Jose A. Marengo
Institution: Earth System Science Center (CCST) - Instituto Nacional de
Pesquisas Espaciais

*Summary:*

The project offers a post-doctorate two-year position at INPE (National
Institute for
Space Research) in Cachoeira Paulista, Sao Paulo, to carry out research on
regional
climate modeling over South America using the Eta Model.

One of the objectives of the project is the enhancement of understanding of
the
impacts of climate change and identifies the main regions potentially to be
affected by
climate change and the vulnerabilities of their populations in Brazil in the
following
sectors and systems: water resources, social aspects, weather related
natural disasters
and mega cities.

The candidates should have experience on atmospheric modeling (model
development
as performing runs and tests). The work will focus on the study of climate
change over
South America imposed by the IPCC and other global climate model future
scenarios
using the Eta Model - climate change version. The work will consist of high
resolution
Eta Model multi-decadal runs and include analyses of mean and extreme
conditions in
the present and future climates.

The candidates should send Curriculum Vitae, letters from two referees and a
letter
explaining the candidate?s interest in climate modeling research. These
documents
should be in PDF to Jose Marengo (jose.marengo@inpe.br) until August 30
2011. The

Dear Colleague,

I'm sending this email to inform you of a new program solicitation just
released by NSF -

NSF Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability Fellows - NSF
SEES Fellows

http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=504673

A sustainable world is one in which human needs are met equitably
without harm to the environment, and without sacrificing the ability of
future generations to meet their needs. Meeting this formidable
challenge requires a substantial increase in our understanding of the
integrated system of society, the natural world, and the alterations
humans bring to Earth. NSF's Science, Engineering, and Education for
Sustainability (SEES) activities aim to address this need through
support for interdisciplinary research and education.

SEES postdoctoral fellows will receive up to 3 years of funding to
conduct research, establish partnerships, and advance their professional
development.

The Proposal deadline is December 5, 2011.

General inquiries regarding the NSF SEES Fellows program should be made
to seesfellows@nsf.gov.

Please share this information widely.

Best regards,
