The Lancaster Environment Centre at Lancaster University is advertising
one additional NERC PhD studentship to start in January 2012. The list
of projects on offer is available at:
http://www.lec.lancs.ac.uk/postgraduate/phd.php
This studentship is competition-funded and open to UK and European students;
the application deadline is Friday 11th November, and interviews will be
held at the end of November.
I would draw your attention to one project on the dispersal of volcanic
pollutants in the atmosphere which draws on Lancaster's strengths in
atmospheric science and in volcanology:
http://www.lec.lancs.ac.uk/postgraduate/phd.php?phd_id=76
This project will focus on aggregation, mixing and deposition processes
in volcanic eruption clouds, and will involve development and application
of the WRF/Chem model. The aim is to improve our understanding of the
evolution of volcanic plumes and to build on and complement other volcano-
related atmospheric studies currently underway in the UK and the US.
For further details, please see the link above, and/or address enquiries
by email to Andy Harrod at lec.pg@lancaster.ac.uk.

A Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (PDRF) in climate change and land
surface processes has been established by the University Research
Committee of the University of Cape Town.
Applications for the Fellowship are invited from suitably qualified
candidates, who will contribute to the development of a South African
capacity in regional-scale land surface modelling, by implementing,
testing and developing the JULES land-surface model in the southern
African context. The modelling capacity will then be used to explore a
number of critical questions of relevance to global change in Southern
Africa including: the response of savannah systems to climate, land
use management and CO2 fertilisation; understanding regional
hydrology, water resources and climate change; regional carbon cycling
and budgets.
Value and tenure:
The Fellowship valued at R200,000 per annum (tax free), and is tenable
for one year, with a second year of tenure available, contingent on
satisfactory progress through year one. The PDRF will work under the
supervision of Professor Mark New.
Conditions of award:
Applicants should satisfy the following criteria:
(i) the PhD must have been awarded within the last 5 years;
(ii) research experience in land-surface modeling, or a closely related
field;
(iii) experience of working in a Linux/Unix environment;
(iv) strong or emerging publication record;
(v) ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team;
(vi) the successful applicant will not have held any professional
permanent posts since qualifying with the PhD degree;
(vii) the successful candidate will be required to comply with the
policies and practices for the Postdoctoral Research Sector at the
University of Cape Town, and
(viii) the successful candidate will be required to register at the
University of Cape town as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and will be
expected to commence the required research by no later than 1 Feb
2012.
Application Procedure:
Suitable candidates should provide the following:
(i) a letter of application;
(ii) a CV which includes full details of publications;
(iii) copies of academic transcripts for the Master?s and PhD degree*, and
(iv) the names of two referees, who are academics with whom the
applicant has worked.
Complete applications must be submitted to Ms S Whitmore
(<shirley.whitmore@uct.ac.za>) by no later than 21 October 2011.
For further information about the research fellowship, please contact
Mark New (<mark.new@uct.ac.za>).
*Certified copies of transcripts and certificates will be required
before the successful candidate can take the position, but uncertified
copies are sufficient at the application stage.

University of Hawaii, School of Ocean and Earth Science Technology (SOEST), Postdoctoral Scholar.
SOEST at the University of Hawai`i in Manoa seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to collaborate in a significant inter-disciplinary project to observe and predict the ocean state of the US Pacific Islands, including Hawaii. Using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) and state-of-the-art adjoint-based four-dimensional variational data assimilation, observations are integrated into the model to generate conditions for ensemble forecasts. Multiple, nested models are employed to capture regional sub-mesoscale dynamics down to high-resolution coastal modeling to explore the physical processes that influence the nearshore environments. The results are part of an important public service to island residents. Further research into the influence of these physical processes on the biology of the region will be encouraged. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team working on similar issues and research. Information about the effort can be found at http://www.pacioos.org.
The successful candidate will be responsible for development of new regional components, ensemble forecasts, scientific research, and daily monitoring. It is expected that the successful candidate will publish scientific articles and contribute to and/or write new funding proposals, etc.
Minimum Qualifications include: Ph.D. or equivalent in physical oceanography, ocean engineering, or related field, ability to work well independently as part of a team, and strong communication skills both verbal and written. Preferred candidates will have experience with ROMS, strong mathematical and computational skills with background in physical oceanography. Candidates should be motivated to drive new developments in data assimilation within numerical modeling.
The initial appointment will be for 12 months with the possibility of extension contingent upon performance and funding. Salary is $56,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Review of applications will begin immediately, and will proceed until the position is filled. Electronic applications containing 1) curriculum vitae; (2) one-page statement of research interests; (3) one published academic article most indicative of your work; (4) contact information for three references to powellb@hawaii.edu. Email verification will be sent upon receipt of your application, please inquire if receipt is not received. For more information, please contact Dr. Brian Powell (powellb@hawaii.edu; 808-956-6724).
The University of Hawaii is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, veteran status, or disability. Applications from women, minorities, and persons with disabilities are encouraged.
